Seems a shame to do all that and end up with a rather slow, nose-heavy, sports car with a DAGDAGDAG diesel that isn't one of the best.
Using a more modern diesel poses even more problems, such as wiring and ECU issues. Complicated. Not something many will undertake, cheaply....
Cool project though.
Oh, and people have fitted LS1 V8's under the factory bonnet, so I assume there's room to fit different powerplants - although a six can obviously be quite long.

I've been wanting to pull off a retro BMW with TDS engine for some time now, E28 TDS for example. They should bolt in and would be fairly easy to get up and running. There's two reasons why I won't ever do this. 1) TDS engines are not great. The economy isn't that high and running costs are compared to the same as the petrol equivalents off the same capacity. Injector pumps are known to go wrong and any sign of serious tuning/boost/fuel and the head will crack. 2) Diesel is effectively 10p a litre more expensive. Yeah it may do more MPG (not in the BMW TDS though!) but the MPG savings could balance out with the additional fuel cost. The diesel engine I would try, though still not very economical, is the Merc OM605 from the C250TD. 5 cyl, so shorter than a TDS engine and they are bulletproof. If you can afford injector pump work, a large turbo, bigger intercooler etc they will do 400bhp. Check out www.superturbodiesel.com

BMW is just too tall for the Mazda, I am putting one into a 41 chevy coupe and that only just fits neatly into the large engine bay.

Hmm. Thanks for all the thoughts. The idea of finding out more via the rx8 forum is logical. I browsed briefly about a week back but the general concensus seemed to be that it you question the efficiency or indeed viability of a rotary in an rx8, you shouldn't own one. Seems a shame as 15 mpg is curse word, not an option for my bank balance, but I really like the package apart from that. No other car with basic sporting pretensions of a similar age compares, and I can't stand French or Italian tin as an alternative. Sounds like the tds is ruled out. Subaru boxer diesel would be interesting but I would have thought they are too recent and not readily available breaking (and for reasonable money?). Maybe it would be simpler and cheaper to slot a standard Mazda petrol lump in, and whack it on LPG....

Not very retro, but wouldn't a BMW 120d more suited to your requirements.
Package comes very close to a RX-8. An with a chip itcomes near 200bhp.

BMW 1 series - RX8 I don't like either - now the RX7 that's a great looking car....but anyway back to the diesel conversion Merc OM605 or OM606 if it will fit - legendary engines Or if you want to go the Subaru route - modern diesel ECU's are getting more common - price is still high though see here

Why not simply convert to LPG ? A quick check shows it's viable on a rotary and no more difficult on a RX8 than any other LPG conversions plus a lot simpler than a diesel transplant. Accepted you won't get the equivalent of double the miles for the same outlay on fuel but I reckon you'd still be looking at high 20's. LPG converted RX8 -

Not everyone drives like a Saint doing 56MPH on motorways either . At that speed I reckon even the M3 would get close to 40MPG ; it does 30MPG doing 75-80MPH!
