keep it simple, if it is your friend and you only want him to bung you £20 for your time, then just charge him for the cost of welding wire/consumables + £20 or if you drink just ask him to pay you for the consumables and throw you a case of beer or something! you'd be paying for it yourself anyway and it seems more friendly than asking for money! However.. Giving an actual asking price makes things much clearer. I've often said 'just throw me a few beers for it' and it's surpringly common to not receive anything... Putting a price on it makes it more a case of a fair price for services provided. Beer can be too friendly I once freecycled some stuff, I asked for no payment but mentioned I'm partial to a bit of Guinness. Bloke turned up and we got chatting, I ended up giving him loads of other stuff for free. I ended up getting 1 can. Can't complain as it was technically freecycle but either way I personally would've taken 4 minimum (gave him about £100 of stuff).

I charge by the hour/day with a £30 minimum, rates vary dependant on who it is and how much time/how little cash I have! If someone wants to strip and prep 1st then it's cheaper but I won't just sling a patch on as it will bite you later when they come back after 6 months/a year and say it's rotted again. Done properly or not done. Here here, my way of thinking also, Patching is fine but do it right, cut out and letin not over.

£5 an inch!! That's quality. I charge £45 an hour for small jobs, otherwise I charge for the job or it gets silly. Cover your own materials, and then as much as you think it's worth for the hassle. Don't short change yourself, but don't sell yourself short either.

The pay me in a few beers quote had often caught me out on welding and other jobs. I consider a few beers to be code for a case of stella, not a 200ml box off or indeed a few beers being 4 cans of fosters! I now work for money and buy my own beer

Haha, I've been caught out the same. Built a sub box, carpeted it and fitted the lot along with a new wiring kit and headunit for a lad who I worked with for a bit. I quite enjoy that kind of work, so I made the mistake of saying "Pay the materials, buy my lunch and sort me out with some beers or something"
I asked for a big tasty meal. Apparently they had run out, so he came back with a plain cheeseburger and some chips cos he wasn't sure if I'd like pickles or ketchup. The "some beers" never materialized!
I don't think he was being tight on purpose, he's just naive and doesn't realise that most places would have been charging £30PH+ for the work I'd just done
