Described as the poor mans aston martin apparently. this thread in the general section starts off my ownership of this MGB- retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=119786&page=1I went down to croydon to view and test drive the car, all was fine so agreed to collect the car a few days later. about 70 miles into a 100 mile journey, the car lost oil pressure, with the needle bouncing between zero and 50 psi. managed to pull into cherwell valley services which was 2 miles up the M40. anyway, as I pulled into the esso garage at the services, the needle was still bouncing between zero and 50psi so the must have been some oil still in there, engine sounded ok when I switched off. after standing for about 40mins, the seemed to be about 1 lire of oil left in the sump ( capacity with oil cooler is about 4.75 litres). under the bonnet, there was some oil sprayed around the drivers side engine bay - not much, just droplets and a fine misting which seems to have come from one of the oi cooler pipes (they look old). long and the short of it, I got home about 3pm via AA recovery not wanting to chance filling up the engine with thin 10/40 for the last 30 miles of the journey.

Nice looking GT, like the colour a lot. Not the best start to ownership, but could've been much worse!

Good looking car, have you determined exactly where the oil comes from?

i think it is the crimp connector on the oil cooler hose that screws into the oil filter housing. that area seems to have the most oil spray.
a buggered PCV valve would also explain where the oil went. it will be blocked off and the hose routed to a catch tank.
photos to follow - just got to move my mini out to get the MG in the garage - should be tomorrow night.

If you've not got much oil spray visible in the engine bay then hopefully it was coming out downwards and blowing back over the floorpan to at least give you some "free" rust treatment for your AA troubles.

Ha....i thought that too! i had a looky under neath when i was waiting for AA man to arrive, expecting to see oil dripping off the cross member.......bone dry! after about 40 mins of the car standing still, i rolled it back - no drips from under the engine....which what puzzled me - where the fupp had all the oil gone? research is indicating the PCV valve.

managed to push the MG into the garage last night. I had to rehome my mini up to B'ham first, then took the opportunity to give the garage a clear out, white wash the walls and part paint the floor first. I popped the bonnet to have a good look around and got underneath to check the sump and gearbox. all looked mildly oily as you'ed expect. no excess oil and no drips off ther sump. I then had another closer look at the oil droplets sprayed around the engine bay and I have concluded that they are coolant! I knew the coolant hoses weren't great - most were weeping but the engine kept a rock solid temp just under N, so wasn't bothered about the coolant weeps. on the journey back from london, the coolant must have been hitting the fan which chucked it everywhere. both the AA guy and myself thought its was oil but it must be a very strong glycol mix with a load of sludge/rust, making it look like oil (at 1230am it did!) tell tale signs on all hoses of minor leakage top hose sludge the paperwork shows that in january 1986 the engine was rebuilt. the receipt indicates a mileage of 16532 on the odo. mot slips indicate the mileage as 1990 22193 1991 22528 1993 22645 1997 23112 2003 23299 2004 23887 2006 24095 2007 24440 2011 24794 My drive from croydon to warwick was probably the longest drive the car had done in the last 25 years. the mileage is now just under 25000 so it looks like the coolant system need a damn good flush. i'm amazed it kept perfect temps! anyway, back to the oil issue, I looked at the PCV valve and it was full of oil and looking into the inlet manfold, there was oil in there too. the valve had certainly failed, probably years ago too, in the porcess consuming about 3 litreres iof oil on the journey back. i poured in approx 3 litres of comma 20/50 which put the oil level way over max. i poured in 1 iltre of oil when i broken down so there mush have been about 1 litre of oil left in the engine. hopefully that was just enough to protect the bearings. I gave the valve a good blow from both ends which didn't seem to make any difference. i'll bung up the manifold hole and reuse the PCV valve with a small breather filter. at a later date, i rig a suitably period looking catch tank. just need some 1/2" heater hose.

Lovely looking car, and the low mileage is unbelievable! A mate had one very similar to this years ago, it prompted me to buy a rubber bumper Gt a few years later. Great cars, I'd have another one in a heartbeat

Nice looking car - great colour!
Check the oil pressure gauge and the piping to it - I had the piping fail on an Imp and it pumped a sump's worth onto the floor inside the car in about 5 miles! Good for rust-proofing, bad for the engine!!

Good for rust-proofing, bad for the engine!! the PO had fitted a new dual water temp, oil pressure gauge but by the looking of it, the flexi hose and rigid pipe for the oil p gauge are original, so I bought both new parts (£10) along with a new coolant hose kit (£18) and the oil cooler pipes (£24). i'm going to david manners again today to get some heater hose, new thermostat and a inlet manifold bung.

Great cars, I'd have another one in a heartbeat the actual mileage 124,000 miles as the odometer only goes up to 99,999, so a rebuilt engine in 1986 at 116,000. not bad going.

Hehe, good ol' Manners . Whilst Manners are cheap, the MGOC Spares sight can surprise you on a couple of the prices even as a non member, so it is always worth searching around . A cracking looking car, and hopefully you have got to the bottom of your oil leakage woes. If they the original oil cooler pipes it could be that they have failed but as you know process elimination will get you there in the end (especially if you have other issues present . Anyway, I have some springs gathering dust .

managed to do a couple of late night stints on friday and sunday night as the missus hasn't gone into labour yet popped into david manners on the way home again on friday to pick up a new 82 deg thermostat and an inlet manifold bung for where the pcv breather valve is normally located. routed some 1/2" heater hose from the breather tube through the front panel and reused the pcv valve (minus its guts) with a small filter. this will do until I can sort out a period looking catch tank before after next up was to drain the coolant. the rad has a brass drain valve but was seized. I managed to unscrew the whole valve out of the rad so will get that unseized, but anyway, the "coolant" drained out desparate for a back flush all the hoses must have been the original hoses fitted when the car was restored in 1990. they looked ok but most joints were weeping and the hoses made that cracking sound when squeezed so deffo time for some new ones. only £18 for a new set of hoses the thermostat housing was well stuck on with years of oxidation, so took plenty of gentle tapping and prying to work it off. whilst the thermostat was working fine, it was coated with that black curse word that indicates a) hardly any coolant flushes in the last 10 years b) a car thats been standing a lot (which is good becuase at least it backs up the low mileage) all this lower hosing was replaced too.....no pic of the new stuff though as my phone battery was low I finished off last night by swapping over the 14" steering wheel for my new 15" one, so the 14" wood rim Motolita is up for sale

All the coolant hoses are now replaced. the last one was the heater to heater tap/block. before i bought the car, I knew the heater wasn't blowing hot so was hoping for a simple fix as heater matrix are £80 new Thought the drive back from croydon up the motoway would blow the cobwebs out but it didn't as I pulled the old hose of the heater matrix, clean water ran out, which was a good sign....must be a blocked or faulty heater tap. the tap mechanism seemed to work fine but it was blocked with icing sugar? : just need to get a new tap gasket and 2 new bolts which i'll pick up after work. last night I felt the need for a mojo boost so broke out the farecla G3 and the megiuars hard wax. gave the drivers wing top a cut and polish by hand. the paint was put on in 1990 and is very good, just has light oxidation. most likely from the PO using washing up liquid since 2003 to clean the car and no wax protection.

...and if you thought this was gonna be just another run-of-the-mill MGB...... down the line, the MG will be getting one of these: one of these: some of this: mixed in with a hif44 and a garrett Gt15 from a saab 9000

You know there was a turbo-kit from Janspeed available for the B-series back in the days There was on kit for sale here in Norway last summer. I considered supercharging my B, but decided to use a NA Zetec instead. Will be interesting to follow your progress/mods

Very nice. A bhp plenty MGB is my fantasy. I have always thought about putting a VAG 1.8T into a MGB, i doubt it can be down though?
The colour scheme of your car is fantastic. The grey really looks good. Better than the normal 70s colours.
Good luck !
