My money is on it being a Gentry kit car. Loosely based on the MG TF, it was one of the many replicas that were around in the 80's. The doors look hinged at the front which is what gives the game away....the Gentry kinda made a bit of a boo-boo with that one by not making the doors suicide (it's not as if it was a spitting image of the TF anyway!) Obviously I can't be 100% because the photos don't show everything, but I am fairly confident.

uh-huh. Only other thing it could have been would be a Spartan, but the door shape gives it away as a Gentry. Gentry kit car by Albert S. Bite, on Flickr

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

certainly could be a gentry, though rear arch line looks a little wrong to me. front wings look right, though rad run out looks more like jb falcon or somat. much the same as the mgts they where styled on every one is different. I used to get a lo of burlingtons and midges in as breakers and they where all so wildly different as just depended how closely they followed the plans, herald chassis and away it goes!

There were a good number of these in the 80's. They stuck a GRP interpretation onto a Herald chassis. When Heralds started getting rare, they made a basic ladderframe chassis for Ford Escort/Cortina or even Morris Marina running gear.
Gentry does seem to be the closest from what I can see (check out the rear deck against others on Google images.)
Others were JBA Falcon, Moss Roadster/Malvern, NG TA, TC, TD, TF models, Spartan, Pilgrim Bulldog, but they don't look like what you have.

More to the point, hoik the tub high into the garage on a frame, and stick your lowest car under it :-)
