Had to go to the Post Office a few minutes ago to get a motorbike spares parcel out to South Africa urgently. Stopped in the carpark and found this plate there against the fence in the weeds, It had been driven over and there was a bunch of oil on it too, thought it would add to Micky next doors pile of brass that he sells on. However, when I picked it up, I noted the picture on it. Nicola has been collecting old smoking pipes of various vintages for some time now, since we went for a "romantic" walk on the Medway riverside one low tide. Note her grubby paws tightly holding all the bits of clay pipe in a small bag that we had found in an hour of walking the shore. Keep in mind, the Medway had a load of wooden hulled Prison Ships years ago, and many of these clay pipes were disposable "penny pipes" Brass plate as found. Straightened out, polished and now wrapped up for Christmas.... ;D And there I was worrying that I did not know what to get her for Christmas. Unfortunately many of these pipes are very fragile, and some get here via courier/postal service, broken. Which is a pity. Yesterday she got a couple of rare, Order of the Buffalo cermonial pipes and one was broken in 2 places, problem is the money is not the issue here, its the fact that they are pretty much irreplaceable. Today, this one which she had been looking for, for a long time came..... bad packaging, resulting in multiple breaks, so worthless in the investment market. I will try to fix is and the Order of the Buffalo pipe. Unfortunately the seller did not know what he had, did a BIN for ยฃ5.00 which Nicola grabbed, but his packing was atrocious. Anyway, what do you have or collect that is slightly, or very "Left Field" ? Worth a lot more before it was broken. Some of the collection. Also the tobacco jars and some other paraphanalia are part of her search, some Victorian ones like the blue on the top right shelf are worth a bit. Last pic, the two ceremonial pipes. Nicola's favourite, the revolver , a traditional "Penny pipe" her dad found for her, a dope pipe my brother sent her and a Chinese pipe off Ebay. Digestive biscuit just for size persective at about 85mm diameter. Please feel free to add pics , comments and opinions of your own weird collections. Thats all for now, Merry Christmas.

when i was a wee kiddie (or about 14 anyway ) I had a slightly unusual collection of erm...hubcaps. started off with finding a merc one and followed with some from our old mk4 escort and a couple of vauxhall ones. if i found any up the road from where i lived then they added to the collection. got rid of them all when I moved house though ....thought it was a bit childish lol

Have a pea-roast So I was having a her indoors induced tidy up this evening (it wasn't the words she used, more the squinty eyes glare) and in various places around the house I found some of the steering wheels I have collected over the past few years. Jacky IckxThis was the first one I bought - ยฃ20 ebay bargain and was on the beemer for 3 years. Jacky StewartSo I have three of these - I was after one for ages after sitting in a Porsche SC at a show that had one in. They are sooooooo chunky and feel perfect for a retro motor. I paid far too much for one in fair condition 2 years ago but then 6 months after I found this perfect one for ยฃ40 and then a few weeks after this one was bought for about ยฃ20 with a 911 hub and a horn push. Once I had sold those I kind of turned a profit on it! Clay RegazzoniI think this one is a bit rare - the more I read about the fella the more I'm impressed. I'm still on the look out for a few others - a Niki Lauda would be nice as would a Mario Andretti. They get rotated on the car so all get a bit of use - at the moment I have a Prototipo that I was given as a thank you on there - it's a bit larger at 370mm and makes low speed manoeuvring a bit easier! Still looking for a Lauda and an Andretti to complete the collection...

Got a PM from Baz over on www.garagejournal.com (he comes on here as well. This was after I had posted Nicola's collection of pipes and smoking related items, and she is still collecting. Anyway, He had his great uncles smoking cabinet that he had rescued when his dad who is 80+ cleared out the garage. Would I be interested in it for Nicola ? Of course I PM'd back. Today Nicola and I went over to Bicester near Oxford impulsively around midday. So I texted him on the way to see if we could pop in at his place on the way home, which we then did. This is the cabinet, not large, but very pretty, in need of a new shelf, some cleaning and a gentle touch up. It is also in excess of 100 years old, so will be treasured. I thought I would post in this thread, rather than start a new thread for it, as I will be making a new shelf etc for it. I love the detail of the carved panels on the doors/ Once you open it, some shelves, drawers. The rack on the right door is missing, and Nicola already said one of her tobacco bowls will go inside on the shelf. I trust most people will approve. Once again Thanks Baz.

And then we got home from Oxford and watford to find a big, well packed box in the secure place behind the house. After posting the weird collection thread recently, I hada PM from David aka PodBod on the UK Teardrop site, to see if I was interested in buying some Meerschaum pipes.... pics followed and a very reasonable price agreed, he also very generously threw in 3 pipe stands. Interestingly, Nicola had just started looking for another pipe stand for some of her better clay pipes, so these were perfectly timed. I let her unpack the "late Christmas/early Birthday" prezzie..... and the look on her face was worth the price. Pics to tell the story. Turban guy, used, very nice. Pattern, new, unused, very nice. Indian head/Native American chief head, used, lovely. Used, magnificent detail, my favourite. Weird collection, undoubtedly, value to me having a happy wife? Priceless. Thanks David for making it possible.

I've stopped collecting anything as illness has made me want to tidy things up a bit. Motoring literature was my passion - especially workshop and owners manuals. I've even got pre WWI motoring books and WWII RAF manual on the Merlin engine (that was issued new to my father-in-law)

I guess this posting will straddle two different threads as it comes from one place and passes another toward an outcome. Recently Nicola has been helping her mum clear up their house of the clutter one collects over a lifetime (mum is 80 ) This week she found an old tobacco jar that dad used a looooong time ago, but it had no lid, Nicola says she remembers it from a long time ago, never having a lid, so maybe it was porcelain and got broken. When I saw it, I loved the ships on it, and decided to have a go at making a wooden lid for it, so that she could add it to her collection. There are three different ships around it. Enter a bit of wood, measured, cut and mounted. Not sure how long it took, but happy with the result. I had planned on putting something on top of the lid, like a small handle, but while I was rummaging for something, Nicola surprised me with a cuppa and some biccies, and of course saw the surprise I was making for her and asked me to leave it plain and simple as it was at that point. This was the result, also good to be back on the lathe for a change, as I have not done a thing for some time. I also burned the top of the lid to create some contrast, and it was meant to focus ones attention on the small handle/item that was going to go on top. Still thinking of changing it a bit more.

Went on ride to Europe this week. Found this pipe for only 5 Euros at a street market in Gent, Belgium. She was very chuffed. I also found a small Cloisonnรฉ glass crucifix in a place called Albert for Nicola's other collection.... crucifixes that get added to her long rosary chain. Once again she was chuffed to bits.

For some reason I started collecting airline salt and pepper sets, the type they used to give you with your meals........... That sounds like a great thing to collect, as they should be fairly hard to get hold of. A fiends wife collects small salt and pepper sets as well, but not the airline tipes. You should post some pics on here for us to see.
