Hi, Even though, I haven't finished my '68 Mini with Swift Gti engine project. I think I have to start yet another project. My friend said I can have his mk1 Midas for next project.... I found out that there are only 56 or so of this model left in the world! So, what do I do? I plan to cut it up and make it into a RWD turbo charged J engined car. All I can do for the moment is to collect spare parts I will need. Here goes my parts list. Well, the car will be the first I think. Engine I'm using Swift Gti 1300cc 16v. Clutch plate and pressure plate. Turbo manifold I have made for it. It will be using saab 900 T2/GT2 turbo. It will have rear disc brakes, too. I'm getting bell housing modified by a machine shop and photo before. I will be using Volvo 360 gearbox which I bought from 340R(Adam). Cheers Atchi

Cool project! I would love to hear you say more about the engine transmission conversion - and especially the engineering - sounds a very cool combination for a small RWD car. Thanks

Interesting to see how you modify the monocoque.
Gordon Murray build himself a Midas with an Alfa boxer engine behind the rear seats, so you are in good company.

Hi hairnet,
The car was designed and started to sell 1978. I think this car is made with 1 donor Mini hence original reg of the Mini.

That could be interesting, but be careful where you chop. The strength is in the monocoque. Personally I'd try to use as many of the original mounting points as possible.
What rear axle do you plan to use?

Hi Darryl,
I will be using modified MX-5 rear suspension with sub frame. My gearbox and drive shaft will be Volvo 360 5 speed unit. I'm trying to get a LSD made for it or I have to make a Phantom Grip copy.
I think I can keep strength by using MX-5 subframe and I will have torque tube instead of just prop shafts. So I think this will make my car stronger due to the front sub frame and back sub frame connected by the engine, gearbox and torque tube as 1.

That appears to be the same as my old midas bronze (pre face lift). If you can, get hold of a facelift midas gold front, they look super sweet. I have a spare heated rear screen too should you wanna buy one

Hi Quackshot, I know what you mean by face lift model. Alan D has 5 Midas in his garage and some of them is mk2(face lift mk1) with spot lights in bumper bit... I'm thinking of fitting quad lights as well as splitter and spoliers as it will be track/sprint car.

Atchi,
Can we get some side/rear shots of the midas? I think this, done right, has an awful lot of potential to be a very unique, pretty car. Yes I said it. Pretty

Hi Camerashy, I like your 280Z keep coming with your build. My uncle had it when I was 8 in Japan. His was 260Z.. Anyhow, I don't have any more photos but I got some from google search. It uses TR7 rear lights. I will be using round rear lights. I think it will suit this design of car better and I will have a purposeful spoiler for the back. I hope it will be pretty looking car when I finish... when I finish... 10 years!? Cheers Atchi

Sounds an interesting build - bookmarked.
By the way, is that a BRM Rover 200 front bumper intake on the roof of the Midas in the 1st photo?

Yes, that is my friend's BRM. My car is still at his garage and he has about 5 Midasese. I just took one of his mk1 for my next project!

Hi, Been a while. A friend was supposed to come over to see few things but he couldn't make it. So I worked on my idea instead. As I have said before, I'm thinking of using modified MX-5 rear subframe. I took my gearbox out of my workshop and placed subframe over it. It looks OK. I think track width may be too wide though. I fitted my 13" Hayashi Street just to check but it will fit bottom arm! So I have to have narrower wheels. Cheers Atchi

Hi, So after a trip to Glasgow, I picked up wheels from my mate. I also bought rear disc roters, calipers, driveshafts and CV joints from MX-5 specialist. I have chosen VW mk1 Golf wheels for my project. With this wheel, I can measure track width. It is 1600mm from one edge the other. I'm hoping to make my subframe narrower by 300mm or so. I need to find out what is the measurement between 2 wheel arches as I will be increasing it. I will be making rear wheel arches like bubble wheel arches for escort or something like that but not too wide. Cheers Atchi
