I don't think any of the original cars posted in this thread run radials?(edit- except for the fronts n the B+W pic) they're all too large an aspect ratio. a radial has a max aspect ratio of 82%, whereas a crossply is 100%. the ones that have a tread pattern that looks a little like them are 50s/60s style bias/cross plys, which where what covered the transition in tyre technology from crossply to radial, and are period correct to the builds. back then hot rodders with money would have wanted the latest and gretest technology on their cars, especially in the tyres. To my recollection, tread wise the American bias belted tyres of that era still resembled a cross ply, just a bit wider and more squat, but I'm not confident enough to argue the point. Purely a personal opinion, but if they look like radial, they don't look right, no matter what the aspect ratio is.

I hate nice period cars ruined by radials, alternators, or disc brakes.

I don't see why youd need to be a masochist to run crossplies either. ive driven loads of cars with em on, and I like the way they react/drive, especially on beam-axled cars. they're good fun!
Get a set of Pneumant 520x14 remoulds on a stock Morris 1000 and you can learn all you will ever need to know about car control and never break a speed limit! Great fun.
