no will be fine, our 406 and xsara both have, air con rad then an intercooler then the water rad and they are the factory close finned type, and they are fine. the ones fitted are high flow aftrermarket type and will be more than enough to cool that engine Ah, good. That's the problem when looking at things through a racer's eyes where everything is being pushed to the limit and things like cooling are often marginal.

How you duct air to the cooling will be important, with the 2 rads if at all possible the air will try to find a way around them(hence why most moderns with ac have an assortment of plastic and carboard upstream ducting), a well ducted puller fan would also be advisable.

I have the original fan and shroud from the Mazda which is a good match for the Rad. Cooling fans are only for traffic jams and really are no use for cooling at speeds above 30 k's. I do get the point about making sure the air flow goes through the rad.... not around it so will look at some side panels to assist with this as required.

Took another journey through your build just to remind me of the amazing amount of fabrication work you have put in. Was wondering if you could dig into your memory for a bit of detail of how the Herald steering column was integrated into the Miata lower section? I do like the seamless result. I have a similar challenge since I extended the Miata wheelbase by 7". Picture shows a temporary solution so that I could set the new length and push the car around and steer. Pete

Hi Pete
My solution is simple but it wont pass our Low Volume Vehicle (LVV)standards here in NZ. I have just done this to get my steering set in place and working. I am sure this would be fine as it was welded by a certified welder... not me but any welding on steering parts are not allowed. I'll keep this setup to do some short road tests but plan on getting a new shaft splined at both ends.
The top universal is the one that joins the original mx5 column. I then cut, drilled and pressed the herald steering shaft into the top piece and got it welded. The top part of the herald column shaft was splined and had a flat on one side to allow a locking bolt to pass thru so when done up it clamped the spine and stop any possible spinning of the shaft even if the bolt came loose. The flat was machined back from the end so this left some spline on the end of the shaft. This also retains the two parts even if the bolt comes loose as it can't slip past the splines on the ends.
I'll probably try and replicate this with the new shaft into the existing MX column section that's below the upper UJ. I hope this makes some sense.
Loving your project by the way. Watching with huge interest.... keep up the awesome work.

Since your column looks seamless, I am guessing you cut the weld in the circled area and slid the Herald column into the stub? What I have discovered is that the Miata splines are unique and not catered to by any of the aftermarket hot-rod suppliers. I am currently without a tame machinist that I could use to make me a new column from stock. thanks for the kind words on my project. Been quite the adventure and feels nice to have turned the corner. Pete

Once again we are on a similar track. My proposed wiper solution is not far from what you did.
Reminds me...get off the internet and go work on the car!

I'll be keen to see your take on this problem. this is just my mock up. I have some nice little rod ends lined up and threaded rod to make the final setup. I'll post some pic's when I get them. I'm over to the UK in April. Are you based there. I thought you might be in Sweden based on your car and thread name but Pete is not very Scandia- hooligan is it. My wife's in laws are in Brighton so if your around SW London area or Kent I'd love to have look at your project.

Still a bit to fettle on the guards but happy how they are developing

Not sure where the wipers are in the priority list right now. But one thing for certain is that with a project like this you need to be collecting ideas and parts as far ahead as possible.
When people read these threads, they often think it all went together in a linear fashion. I wish people could see the pile of discarded first attempt$
and yeah...London Ontario Canada. If I were in Scandihovia, I would not be mucking with cars, I mean have you SEEN the women that are in those countries!

Hi Pete, Just remembered the mx5 bottom universal fits the top of the steering column splines as well so if you can get another one then you just need to get a shaft splined at each end at the correct length. This just replaced the existing one there already. Pretty sure you'll need to get the splined shaft hardened/heat treated once done. Agree with you about the Scandi girls. I worked in Greece many years ago and they would fly into Skiathos by the plane load. Highlight of the week for a young fella

How's the progress? - I had been following this with interest knowing I would be installing MX5 gear into the G21.

Regarding the steering shaft. I finally found a solution that did not require any welding of the steering shaft. While the vendor is less than kind to non-USA clients, they did solve the problem. www.woodwardsteering.com/ Two of their joints and a double-d shaft cut to lenght took care of this challenge.

I cannot tel from the pictures you have posted but will you need to do any arch work on the front to clear the wheels over hang?
I have to say this is one of my fravorite threads on RR keep up the good work and porogress.

I have to say this is one of my fravorite threads on RR keep up the good work and porogress. Thanks Peteh, I've cut the guard back to the inner arch and will raise the ride height slightly and have a small arch flare. I'm only having 4" of overall wheel travel so only need 2 " of compression clearance. I do have to cutout the inner arches at the front to allow turning clearance. It will be tight!!
