Morning peeps! Been pondering possible powerplants for the Lanchester project and would like your opinion on the matter. The Olds would be an obvious choice just cos I have it already but I have the option of an old Pinto sat at work along with a transit Type9 gearbox which would work ok for me but given the nature of a Hot-Rod and the times we live in at present I really cant choose! 4 pot or 8 pot? Sensible or Balls-Out? Help! This should be a simple decision but somehow I just cant decide...... V8 for me, especially as you have one.. ;D Also means I can say this: how much for the 4-pot Type 9? (the one I've got is off a V6 so no good, tho apparently worth more money )

Hmmmm - would you have enough space to fit a straight six? Because . in my opinion, nothing beats the sound of a six cylinder engine Something like this... OMG! If not, I vote flathead V8!

I personally would look for a more modern engine, perhaps a BMW V8, lots of reliable easy power and rear wheel drive with gearboxes, axles to suit and at the moment cheap. ;D Or something like a Lexus V8 drive train

It's a tough one. I guess your kind of like me in the sense that a 4 pot would make it cheaper to run and therefore it would be used more, which is nice. Question is, would you enjoy those miles as much or feel slightly cheated with the choice? Just burbling along on idle a v8 sounds sweet And after all that I've voted for the Pinto option ;D Decent oldish modernish motor for a old car.

I guess the decision should be made by what you intend to use it for when its built. If its occasional use, then a V8, if you want to do miles in it, then a 4 pot (like a SEH, enough torque and power, but should still return 40MPG)

How often you going to be driving it? Will you be able to afford running it on the V8 for the intended usage? I can't help but think that a Rover V8 would be somehow more inkeeping with the type of build but can't pinpoint exactly why.

I'd drop the transit box idea for a start , the gearstick will be too far forward and the BH is HUGE, better off with a car box and or BH and flywheel IMHO. TBH i'd drop a 6 cy TD in there and be differant ;D

Anything but 4 cylinders in my opinion. Hot rod has to have aural satisfaction and a pinto just wouldnt cut it (for me). a 5, a 6 or an 8, diesel or petrol. 5 cylinder merc dizzles sound awesome, run great on veg and can be boosted for mega powers (assuming there is no room for a 6) The beauty of a non-4 banger diesel powerplant is they're usually cheap to pick up, cheap to run (veg), give you great noises and loads of theatre from smokeyness. Plus its a bit different. Second to that.... the v8 you already have

T5 engine or Audi? 5 cylinders can sound nice too....
Normally I'd just say V8 but you do have an unusual car.

with a 4 pot, or maybe even up to a 6 pot deseasel, you get away just boxing and strengthening the stock chassis and some mild uprating of other existing componentry.
for a proper 8, youll need to do a full chassis build with different axles, suspension and brakes, which will then neccessetate loosing half the floor, bulkhead, interior and wheel tubs too.are you cable of that(both in terms of fabrication and designing it properly), and do you really want to get into having to do it will all youve said about originality and keeping it understated?
