alistairk in da house: Case in point was a late 40s Chevy on eBay recently with a really bad roof chop, it was uneven and you could see where the fillets had been welded in like a big cross on the roof. cut springs so low it was whacking hell out of the front vallance, (not drivable IMO), and forget about the scrub lines... patchy rattle can paint job and it was up as "kool radikal rat rod". and made up like the bad work was done on purpose
Soooo don't buy it!!!!! Go out and create something that overshadows that ride with a 1000% sounds like you could do that easily..........
Sure it's sad to see cars and bikes beeing used & abused but who are we to say it's cool or not??? Sure we all have a right to an opinion on the subject but I get a bit irritaded with people who feel (not you alikstairk so much) they can sit there infront of a keyboard, looking at pix and pass judgements on others efforts, bad or good. I see a ton of this stuff all over the web and have myself been (viritually) beaten up quite good for building Strippers of perfectly good bikes, some people feel they have to act "Style Police" but most of them have only a HD full of pix of stuff others have built and not a shred of credability, have to say I loath this type of "Style Police" types but I also have to live with that they are there and if I don't want to get kicked in the ba**s for doing what I do I don't have to show it, so I'm as much the root of the problem as any "Style Police"....

Rearwheelnick, I'm confused by you having a problem with people 'buying a beaten up old muscle car and spending fcukoads on it' - its these people that are helping keep our scene alive. Would you rather it just stayed being beaten up and rotted away!!??!! no i wouldnt see it staying beaten up and rotting away. i was just commenting on every single american car builder show being the same. buy old car, spend £60k, end up with something that looks cack, as its not complimented the original design. and instead gone for some sort of muscle car bling bling thing as a show piece. of course i think its a shame to see cars rotting away, but sometimes i do wonder if it would be better to just let them die with some dignity instead of being turned into the ultimate showboating hideously big wheeled "driving machine"

Ah, me thinks dp overestimates my cosmetic welding skills... Theres a fine line between making constructive criticism and dissing, and another fine line between being a "commentator" and a "style po0lice" keyboard warrior. So I'll shut up now...

OK, my opinion, and its worth as much as anybody elses, which is about zero, is this... Some guys start doing something cool. This could be either building old time style rods or it could be taking 60s muscle cars and making them handle for road courses. They have fun doing it and mind their own business. A few years pass and a magazine or two pick up on what these guys are doing. Features occur. More people see whats going down and want a piece. All cool so far. Then the scene poseurs move in. They are more rat / pro / whatever than anybody else and they have alllllllll the attitude to back it up. Some of them have the $$$$$$ to pay a guy to build a spot on ride for them and some of them hack something together themselves. But its more about being seen on the scene and being the big dog than it is about a love of the cars or the use for which they were designed or modified. Thats how I see that 'Cuda and thats how I see some of the rat rods. Its more about the LOOK AT ME!!! than about the good old fashioned looking right. To me if it don't look right it ain't right. I hate to sound like I have something in my butt about rat rods but it just beggars belief sometimes that these guys are all about doing their own thing (fine) and get upset when street rod shows don't want anything to do with them (again, fair comment) but then go off in just as bad bitching about how sad it is to have a painted car... nope... now they just became a zealot/biggot as bad as the billet & power parking guys are.... And worse I read in a established scene magazine a while ago, they'd found this cool gasser but they weren't going to feature it because it had billet rims and billet is evil. Then a few weeks later someone poointed out they weren;t billets there were period Ansen mags! FFS people putting these magazines and espousing their opinions don't even know a basic thing like that.... Meh! I physically slapped my forehead when I read that. [and breath... think of dolphins... ahhh....] And here's a real "rat" rod to finish off with usera.imagecave.com/33hemi/_NHR1582.jpgEDIT: URL'd it as the pic is too big

A discussion like this is interesting and healthy. I have noticed that these cars have a bit of a fat ass, and this one looks emphasised, maybe its the picture angles, maybe thats the way it is, still like the styling, and if moneys spent, thats cool i'd do the same if i had it to hand out! I do dislike ego's though, if I met the owner of a show car and he had a big ego, i'd probs go off the car TBH, it does happen - 'ohh look at me' kind of thing, its like the guys on big motorbikes nodding at the 125ers, thats what the scenes all about for me. The characters on here is one of the main reasons, i like their cars so much, they speak for the owners. Now the owner of this needs to get out there and make us some sideways videos and stop polishing.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Yeah but Jodie Marsh gets nominated as Britains most beautiful woman but she's a disproportionate mess. *did actually vote for it though*

I love it.
It's aggressively styled, it's well put together, it's a great fusion of oldschool and newschool. A real retro-tech machine IMO. Flawless workmanship added into the mix... I can't see the problems people have with it!
I love the subtle graphics on the flanks, that's lovely. The whole thing is so smooth, bumper to bumper.... I think it just takes past and current rodding/custom trends and techniques and uses them differently.
And as to how much it cost to do, that's entirely irrlevant. A wicked car can cost $500, or it can cost $500,000, if it makes you sit up and go *OOOOOOF* (to pinch you fella's saying) then it's worthy in my eyes.

I think reanimations picture above is much more flattering of its shape. Just looks damn tough in that one. I hated the look of the new ROlls when I saw photos of it and on TV but then when I see in in teh West End being chauffeur driven around it all clicks. I bet in the flesh, when you can take it all in this car looks awesome. I think the Hemi graphics are a subtle representation of a factory period option? Still think a '72 era Funny Car makeover would look though ;D

I see it a lot like that but you forgot the bit where people have invent a cool buzz word to describe the 'look'. It's only a matter of time before some shows have a cat walk the owners mince down. "Now Terry's modeling a cheeky open top number which combines a traditional pro-touring body with ratrod influenced detailing and a modern streak which is just - oh my god wow. This flexible look can be used for attending dinner parties or just going to shops and when combined with a set of darling 22 inch billet rims you will be the star of the show. For those metal fans out there how about trying the same with a set of black steels and a roof rack, rock and roll!"

I'd like to point out I have nothing against the guy who owns this car, and he may be a really top geezer, he may not be a poseur, I don't know him.... its just his car doesn't "work" for me.

I like it and I reckon you`d have to drive it to get the full effect but I think the guy made a rod for his own back trying to improve on the looks of the original Hemi `Cuda, its impossible. Reminds me of the Challenger concept car (gonna build it so they say) - looks stunning then Vanishing Point comes on TV and you see the original being thrown around and forget all about the concept. Still looks nice though and as someone said the graphics are a nice touch.
