More info required by my retro-brain, I'm afraid! Here's what I know at present: - they are based on the Avenger - they make me horny - they go very fast, often sideways - The Lotus ones have a 2.2 Lotus engine Clearly not enough knowledge. Who'd like to fill me in some more? Image shrunk to appease Johnny 69

Rare, 1600Tis seem to come up less often than Lotus' (Lotuses? Lotii?) and, understandably go for less.
I love the iron cross-esque rims the Tis came on.
I reckon a 1600Ti with placcy windows, little interior, polybushes and a Family II 2.0 8v would be the bomb-shizznat as a budget backlane beasty.

Seem to remember Street Machine magazine did a "how to fit a Rover V8" feature years ago. Also I think the bloke whose car they used for the feature had also fitted Capri injection front brakes which bolted straight on. Cant rember what issue it was though, sorry.

Yes there're based on the Avenger platform so most of the parts are interchangable. Lotus uses the 911 series slant four Lotus engine, similar to the Eclat/Elite with Dellorto Carbs Ti uses the 1600 S spec pushrod engine (similar to the Avenger Tiger) with Webers Parts, especially quality tuning parts are an to get hold of but suppies are getting better all the time.

This is what you should aim for my old Frankensunbeam monstrosity ;D 2.0 pinto, 5 speed with a mk4 escort front bumper, nissan micra back bumper and a silvia bonnet bulge ;D quality vehicle cost me £220 removed the 4 pot callipers and 6 14" wellers for my escort then sold the rest for £550 Sunbeams and avengers both excellent cars. Even possible to get a 1.0 sideways without trying to hard. Ford fit wheels and m16 front calipers so easy to put 2.8 crapi vented brakes on with no mods. Much better handling than a standard mk1 or 2 escort. Sunbeams are twitchier, avengers are a bit better balanced. I`ve done many stage miles in my brother in laws avenger rally car both with its original 1600 with about 100bhp and then with the 4age fitted and spent most of the time sideways. I really need to get some pics of his mk1 avenger though, immaculate, brand new shell in full works colours, nearly ready for historic use. He also has a bare metalled sunbeam ti shell ready to be built back up with a supposedly 140bhp 1600 engine as his next stage car.

don't discount the 1.3,s either, i had one and it spent most of its time sideways too and the engine was fairly unkillable, as tcc will attend to. howabout 30 miles with no oil and water, plug leads melted to the head. put fresh fluids in the day after , fired right up with no probs what so ever, watch out fot popping second gears tho. ;D ;D ;D

The red one in the first pic is a Series 2 Different wing mirrors and bigger lights) while the black one in the second pic is a series 1 (smaller headlights and mirrors mounted on the door skin) All Series 1 were black with silver stripe, Series 2 came in black or moonstone blue, Motorsport shells were white. Lotus Shells differ from other models in that the battery was mounted in a different place under the bonnet and they have a bigger trans tunnel. Sunbeams were based on a shortened Avenger floorplan, so most performance parts are interchangable. Front brakes on the Lotus are M16 Calipers ala RS2000

Back in the late 80’s/early 90’s Sunbeams were THE car to have as a fully ironed-up 2-litre stock car on the ovals, an awful lot must have gone that way. Don’t know why they were preferred to Starlets as favoured by the rodders, must have been some quirk of wheelbase, suspension or something suiting the class a bit better.
Oddly, despite being a smallish RWD car very few Sunbeams (and Chevettes likewise) were ever raced as a rod, that was always the domain of Starlets after the glory days of MkI/II Escorts.
Read something recently about creating a 2-litre version of the Avenger/Sunbeam engine out of a Brazilian block, or did I just dream that?
