I have got a Mk2 shogun which is my offroad plaything . Mine is a 3lt 12v V6 which ive converted to lpg. It has also been lifted about 6" has a snorkel and mud tyres. MPGs is around 15 on a good day on gas which I'm payin 67ppl. I have got the locking rear diff on mine and it makes a massive difference to off road performance. The independant front suspension is the biggest let down for offroading capabilities but the positives certainly outway this!
The 3.5 actually returns better economy than the 3lts and has a lot more grunt. Being frugal you should see mid 20s but with a lead foot this can soon drop
The diesels seem to suffer more head problems than the petrols and its vital to keep the cooling system in tip top condition. The 2.8s can suffer from fuel pump seals going which is a few hour job but a only a couple of pounds part!
