Dunno why there are so many MG's and Trummies and the like left. Maybe its due to the owners being passionate about the cars from the word go. But surley this has got to be the same for the J-tin stuff has it not? For me (I am Biased) This is good as it means cheap and readily avilable parts.

Thats a lot to do with it, particularly in the UK and US, where older British sports cars are treasured and have been collectable since day one. J-tin was always going to be transport for the masses, and still has yet to convince some classic circles that they are indeed worthy of being saved.
SMMT figures of remaining Datsuns are pretty low, most cars are down to double figures now, where as the Z stuff - particularly the 240Z is actually increasing. This says a lot about how desirable a sports car is compared to a family saloon.

Gordon Keebles have a pretty good survival rate but then its easier when its a desirable car and not many were made! Of the estimated 150ish Sun-Tors like ours that were made its reckoned about 70 survive which is pretty good going.

If theres just been something in the Metro about it expect the DVLA to be flooded with enquiries for the next couple of weeks then.
Someone on Buysellcortina got a full break down for the Cortinas. Even down to trim spec. The rarest car was a 1600XL Automatic 2 door of which there was only one registered!
10 years ago Vauxhall did a thing for each of the Vauxhall clubs to tell them how many examples of each of their cars were still out there. At the time there were something like 110 Ventora left (FD and FE combined). I bet theres a lot less now.
The thing is figures now are a little more accurate as they've had a purge of the old V5 docs when they went to the V5C so all those cars that got scrapped without notifying the DVLA will have been written off the register. So there could be down to 50 of the Ventoras by that chalk...

oh and distinction betwen "cars left" and "cars left on the road" - ie with current tax... The DVLA figures are usually for the number of cars which are still registered whether they are taxed or not.

Skoda Estelle (77-92) 102105 sold - 612 left such a rediculously low surviving number its the same for a lot of the cars in that list. i guess it just means we have to look after what we've got!

The SMMT figures which we get at the Datsun OC are based on cars still/recently taxed, so there will always be a few more hidden away. In the case of something like Cortina I imagine some racers will have a good stock of them which will have been off the road for a while.
In the case of the Cortina, I now feel priveleged to have seen one of the 2010 just this lunchtime.
I'm not convinced about those figures for the Metro. Fair enough there aren't many A-series powered ones left, but I still see a good number of early 90's ones around.

We got a comprehensive breakdown for cpuk of every model and trim varient of Peugeot sold in the UK since 1966!! very interesting!
I thought that despite the tough life they lead that Land Rovers had one of the highest survival rates of any car - might be talking tosh though!

I emailed the 1st bloke about Starlets & heard that there are only 267 RWD ones still registered, no idea how many were sold in the UK though. Only 2 1.2 'S' models left from 1980 & guess what I've got in the yard

The low number of Marinas is mainly down to the fact they were a 'bread and butter' car that never achieved any limelight in the way Escrotes did, and even today, tidy cars with about £50 worth of welding are scrapped. This is a shame, as there are (as some of you will have realised) and active band of lunatics out here developing the cars and improving them way beyond what BL built. At least we have plenty of donors in the shape of MGB's, TR7's and original Mini's for parts and electrics........ My GT is one of 9 registered with the DVLC and somewhere a bodyshell of one still has my name against it........

Cortina Mk4/5 (76-82) 1065682 sold - 2010 still going ? i think these figures are plums all day long ive been entertaining pr1cks who stop me working on my car to tell me theres only 2000 odd left, i would say nearer 6000 Cortina mk4/5's still left - although mk4's are becoming rarer - but theres at least 500 mk5's on ebay per annum all this kind of tabloid curse word does is push up prices

That sounds suspiciously like The Metro have cribbed it straight from this weeks Auto Express!
They ran an article about cars from the 80s and 90s and how many had lasted.

The vehicles with the highest percentage rate of survival (and remember we are talking percentage rate) Are LAND ROVER 1,2,2A,3 & 90, 110, 130, 101 and other 'specials' (But NOT including the Freelander or Discovery) at around 70% And ROLLS ROYCE (Including BENTLEY) at over 80% As a side note the most produced vehicle in the world and which is still the most used vehicle in the world ever is the HONDA 50 CUB (and it's 'step through' body design derivatives e.g. C50, 70, 90, C100, CUB)... over 42 million since late 1950's and still going Probably better known to most of us as the 'Chicken Chaser' ! ;D

What a fascinating thread!! The Manta club got info back from the DVLA recently that there were less than 1000 left of all varieties. Scary seeing as over a million were built. Have heard that there are less than 200 Monza's left on the road, but not sure how much truth there is in that. I thought that despite the tough life they lead that Land Rovers had one of the highest survival rates of any car - might be talking tosh though! I heard it was in excess of 90% are still extant. Not bad! Especially considering the number blown up in military use etc. I remember about 10 years ago the Range Rover was advertised as being so tough over 75% of the ones built were still on the road. (Presumably the other 25% were mudplugging at the time! ;D
