I am sick, I tell you, sick. Despite being poor I have spotted an opportunity to acquire an interesting American car with no engine or box. I thought my best bet would be to shove a diesel in it and call it a practical daily. What sort of diesel would give a 2 ton barge "acceptable" performance and decent economy.... And be cheap to acquire and easy to fit and maintain... Ideally should come with an auto box... Not exact car...

Mercedes OM603 3l 6 pot turbodiesel? About 150HP & 270nm. They also made 3.5l - but apparently it's no good and lacks longevity (and isn't much stronger anyway)... Or the succesor OM606 (also 3.0 6 pot) which seems a popular engine for conversions; ~177HP & 330 "torques" in it's turbocharged guise. Was used in the W140 S-Class which also weights about 2 tonnes. So I guess it's just about "adequate". W140 S-Class was quoted at about 30MPG, 11.2 secs 0-100km/h and top speed of 206km/h (128mph). Came with 5 spd. auto box. Though the 5th gear is a electronically switched overdrive. At a guess the earlyer 4 spd. autoboxes should fit as well. Might be easyer as no electronics are involved

black smoke racing use a an om606 6pot diesel from a '98 merc. 170bhp standard and they're pushing out over 400, so it should have some poke.

these modern Volvo type diesels and whatever are all very good but do they come in RWD configuration with a handy auto gearbox and (this applies to the Merc/BMW lumps as well) do they require complex electronic cack in order to work? Many of the modern ECUs are all integrated with anti car jacking and climate control and all that and aren't easy to transplant.

From the Iveco Daily/Turbo Daily. Available in 2.5 and 2.8 litre guises, both turbo and NA. The NA 2.5 is 75ish BHP (avoid..) and the turbo and IC'd 2.5 and 2.8s are both around 120. Relatively good MPG, easy to wire in as they're simple 1 wire to the stop solenoid jobs. Seem fairly small for what they are if a bit tall but do weigh as much as you'd expect a 2.8 litre iron blocked diesel to. They're Fiat bellhousing pattern. Bosch pumped, too, if you like the smell of chip shop I believe Matt (Stealthstylz), when considering a similar conversion settled on the Isuzu 2.8 from a Frontera and will be needing a gearbox from a 2wd Isuzu/Vauxhall Brava.

But, Black Smoke Racing runs them on a inline pump (Bosch I guess). So I guess it's adaptable. I'm just in the process of finding that out. [edit] Yeah, looks like it'll work... Doesn't even need electrics to run it this way ;D Hmmmmm... This thread gives me bad ideas ;D

OK, so whats the position with biodiesel, WVO, new veg oil, heating oil, etc. with these Merc lumps?
30MPG on diesel is 37 mpg on biodiesel (depending on price diferential obviously) and more like 40 MPG on new veg oil and more on WVO if you get it cheap or free. Which I don't think I can so I am sticking to biodiesel really.

Ok, I was a bit wrong - it's the 4 & 5 cylinder variants of the OM606 (OM604/605) that have the distributor type pump. The 606 does have a electronically controlled Bosch inline pump which can be swapped for a OM603 (fully mechanical) Bosch inline pump. Those Bosch inline pumps are prime candidates for runing on veg oil as they'r very tough They basically swallow anything you feed 'em ;D For aggresive biodiesel all rubber seals have to be swapped for bio-diesel resistant viton seals. Should be readily available from the SVO-boys and cheap to replace. Bigger dia. fuel lines would also be good for runing on (near-)100% SVO or WVO.

Cheers. This is building a very naughty idea in my mind...
The donor for a OM606 is a Mercedes S300 Diesel, does this make them expensive to buy?

The donor for a OM606 is a Mercedes S300 Diesel, does this make them expensive to buy? Maybe buy a donor vehicle, rather than just the engine and gearbox? I think if you sell of the bits you don't need, especially the interior, you'll do alright out of it. That's dependant on you having the readies to buy the whole car and the space and time to strip and sell it. I've seen ex-wedding service W140 diesels pretty cheap, though very tired looking.
