What would you build ?
I'm guessing everyone wants this kind of car, but ive a desire to build something fun. Something retro and rear wheel drive, cheap base car, cheap to modify. Something reasonably small and light i can strip out and chuck a cheap, reasonably powerful engine in. Something simple too, so that rules out fuel injection and asociated ecu's.
You know the thing, cheap, fun, rwd and retro.
Say a total buget of 1K to 1.5K TOPS, all in.

Hmm, e21 Bimmer I think, stripped out and slammed over some nice dished alloys. Satin black paint, and an M3 lump.
This will probably change many times during the day... but this was the first thing to come into my head ;D

For that budget, a Chevette/Kadett. You won't beat it.

personally i wanted a nippy small car my thinking went a bit like this:
Hmm i want a small nippy car - realises its not affordable- looks at Metros and Micras on ebay - thinks RWD - RR member puts starlet up for sale at bargain price but far away - considers MR2 cos always liked em - RR member posts up MR2 for sale - chickens out too close to christmas! Bags old shagged MR2 Via MK1 club link!
And I'd do it again! I'd really like a buggy but its pushing it at that price. You could also look at Anglias etc Imps?

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Some interesting options. Ive been leaning towards the vauxhall route, or ford, just because its cheap and easy. Its going to have to be done one day, eventually ill sell a volkswagen and buy a different make! For the last 12 years of driving ive only owned one non vw!

I'm agreeing with penski on this one - a Chevette would fit the bill. Cheap, RWD, easily modded and satiatingly retro. I was going to get one to meet my RWD needs, but I went the J-tin route.

Sorry for the thread Hi-jack, but how's the Datty coming along odin? I've been rather busy since discovering the 'comedy' strut bodge. Needless to say, it's still broken and attempts so far to find a replacement have proved futile. If anyone has an offside strut for a 910, let me know! However, when it is fixed I've got some plans for it....

Yeah I'm on there, chap. No luck in the Wanted section as of yet.
I'm tempted to weld it up, but I doubt I'd trust that and it would obviously be better replaced with new.

Cheap Sprint. 130+BHP, comfortable, usable, tough, easy to get parts for. And you don't see many around and other people go "ooh" at them at a lot BMW's are nice but I always find the insurance extortinate, even on lowly models. A "plain" 318i is 700 quid more than my previous 180BHP Sprint. Erm, No, thanks! ;D Or you buy a knackered 1850HL - say, 200-300 quid for a soundish one, drop in a TR7 engine, set of twin webers and a piper cam, few other odds and sods and you've got a great sounding lump Or you can fit a selection of other motors in that too...K Series, MX5 engine, V8s, V6s, turbo lumps. Old thing with engine conversions is that anything is possible, if you've got enough money and time!

Something really old that won't lose its value. Something that will be worth more when ypu're dne with it. Like a shagged 30's Morris for £500 on eBay, drop in a 1275 Midget engine and box, adapt on some juice brakes, leave the rest of the car as is, just a lot lower, standard interior etc. That would be a hoot.

I'm biased I know... but you cannot beat a KP Toyota Starlet for the criteria you have laid out.
The engines basic, and damn near indestructable (seen one run at full throttle for 45 mins with no oil or water). Easy to get a bit more power out of, plus you have bolt in and go 4K and 5K options. They have pretty sweet handling for a budget econobox thing, rack and pinion steering etc. which is nice.
4x114.3 PCD gives you buttloads of wheel options too!
