Hey folks. I don't really know where to start with this, basically, my Grandads van, a Mercedes 206D, appears to not even exist on howmanyleft.com and i just cant find out any real info about them. He's decided he'd consider selling it, but what are things like this worth? They're rare as hens teeth from what i gather, especially in this condition. Could anyone tell me more perhaps? I don't know much about them, at all, and could do with abit of educating. Just afew pictures so you know what I'm talking about. This is a 1975. And any info would be much appreciated. Cheers, Jon.

hahaha... dang, my german isn't so up to scratch. From the reading i've been doing i gather that these vans are more common in Europe. And that the engines are bombproof. But thats about it really. This van has the full original camping interior.

They are basically a van Mercedes continued to build. Before it was made by Tempo/Hanomag and Henschel. All old german manufactureres that went bust a long time ago. The machanicals are probably bomb proof if maintained regularily and rust and missing interior bits are probably going to be your worst enemy ;D Cool van!! There's a scrap metal guy local who collects metal with a Hanomag build ex-ambulance. Very nice!

My Grandad has owned it since 1986, and no expense has been spared, i know what you mean about the rust, i think thats been the biggest issue, but its always been cut out and replaced.

That's a great looking van. I'm more used to seeing them with the presumably later black plastic grille etc as in DW's post.

Really lovely thing, I have looked at them a couple of times and considered getting one but never found a solid enough version. As ever with this it'll be ebay that sets the price really. You could stick it up for £5995 and see what interest you get. There will be one person who can't live without it, it's just finding them that's the problem... ;D

I have questioned a few times how accurate 'How many left?' actually is. It's funny about the camper van you picture because i happen to know there's one of them in pale blue parked up on somebodys drive around the corner from the rents house, i'm sure it on an R-plate and it was on the road cos i saw it going about a few months back. Cool as hell tho would love one myself but know naff all about them too

Only ever seen one, and it looks like it had just broken down on the M6 as it was parked on the Lymme exit roundabout, with Mercedes recovery attending. Lovely looking thing.

Woah, so there is afew about. Well, howmanyleft.com is certainly wrong, because this ones always been taxed and mot'd and howmanyleft.com seems to think none exist in this country. haha. You are right, ebay will be the measure of what its worth. Which is a shame i guess, people had been telling my Grandad to take no less than 10K for it if he ever came to sell it, but then who would ever know what its worth when theres no market for them.
Cheers for all the comments guys!

If this is as nice as it looks, it must be one of the best in the country. As previously mentioned, rust killed off most of them, but mechanically they were very durable. A seperate twin tube chassis, twin wishbone front suspension with torsion bars, a leaf sprung beam out back. I think they all had drum brakes, but I could be wrong on that. The diesel models used the Mercedes OM616, which is reasonably bomb proof apart from timing chains, which they eat! The front wheel drive transmission is a ZF four speed, and is as sexy as hell. I always thought that it looked like it belonged in the back of something exotic. They were built in Spain much later than in Germany, and eventually morphed into the MB 100D. They still have quite a following in Europe, so there will be lots of info and advice available on the net. As regards value, you could try it on eBay with a high BIN price, but invite offers. That way you can get an idea what people are prepared to pay without risking it selling for silly money. If you get an acceptable offer, take it. (here is a guy on there just now asking £500,000 for a Split Screen!) Good luck!
