Licence copy vs badge engineering, fair enough, but there were badge engineered cars within groups prewar.
Also the dodge charger daytona and Plymouth superbird share no exterior body panels. They aren't so much badge engineered as two different cars on a common Platform

Dodge Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbird Obvs loads of Americans like that, but they're my favourite Err - no While the Superbird and Daytona are both built on the mid-size B-body platform, the Superbird is based on a Roadrunner which is derived from a Plymouth Satellite, while the Daytona is based on a Dodge Charger which was a sport luxury coupe that shared no panels with the Dodge Coronet which was the main-mid-range Dodge offering which in turn shared no exterior panels with the Satellite/Roadrunner/Superbird. In fact, in the late 1960s and early 1970s Chrysler and Ford didn't really engage in Badge engineering. Valiant/Dart/Barracuda - different sheet metal, different wheelbase, Coronet/Satellite/Charger, - different sheetmetal different wheelbase, Barracuda/Challenger, different sheet metal, different wheelbase. Mustang/Cougar, different sheetmetal, Ford Falcon/Mercury Comet - different sheetmetal, different wheelbase.

What about the Galaxy-Sharan-Alhambra(?) badge engineering? Then ford came out with the new galaxy as it was sick of being the last in the que for body builds in the VW plant! Problem is the new Galaxy is so good that other manufactures have just waved the white flag, and just filling the segment with old models given a face lift, thanks ford for making people carriers good but no one want to compete with you

Don't you get one free or something when you buy a new Aston? No. As Mike said you get to pay three times what you would for the Toyota to get a car with inferior perfomance but nice seats. A friend is on the production engineering team at gaydon and they are less than impressed at having the project foisted on them as a fait accompli. Need to get group emmissions down and make a lightweight, fuel efficient car? Fine, let the engineers do some engineering. A lotus Elan or a Smart roadster would have been a much more suitable platform. Back on topic

General Motors are definitely the most guilty of badge engineering. My favourite of which is the J platform.
