I still need a new choke knob but ive had a few other issues since fitting the new dash. Which I'm a little stumped with. My car was vandalised last week and the dashboard was smashed to kingdom come. Luckily I had a replacement to fit but it was of unknown origin and does seem to be causing a few problems. I'm struggling to get my thinking head on at the moment as every time I do I end up thinking of novel ways of getting revenge instead ;D On the bright side I feel the best way to deal with this is to just get the car back up and running as well as it was before to stick it at them. 1. At about 40mph there is an audible ticking noise from somewhere behind the instruments. 2. The temperature and fuel gauge are playing up. They read when the ignition is switched and when the engine is fired up but a few seconds later they drop back to zero and stay there unless the car is switched off. Ive checked all the dash earths and they are all good so I'm wondering if the voltage stabiliser could be the issue? The one that I do know whats causing is a fuel light that wont go out. That might be something to do with there being a 2 port sender in the tank and 3 wires to connect

You do realize you have to put some fuel in it from time to time? That might solve the fuel light Kidding aside, that ticking sound behind the instruments is probably the speedo cable that's in a tight turn or might be worn/not fitted properly.

Realised today that whether or not the engine is running makes no difference to the fuel and temperature gauge.
This is what happens.
Switch ignition on and fuel gauge slowly rises to read what is in the tank as soon as it gets to what is in the tank it drops straight back to zero.
This does seem to be a strange fault

As before the ticking is likely a bent speedo cable. No idea on others I'm afraid

by voltage stabiliser do you mean the same as what I'd call the regulator? Big Lucas box set back somewhere from the engine? Does the Tri (it's the FWD isn't it that was vandalised?) have a dynamo or alternator?

No I don't mean the regulator as when I converted it to an alternator I used one with a built in regulator and re-wired to suite. That is working as it should. The part I mean is the Voltage stabiliser which purely feeds the temperature and fuel gauge. It is there to stop the the gauge fluctuating with bumps in the road. A diagram of a stag dash nicked from rimmer bros. The dash uses all the same gauges just a few more and the voltage stabiliser is interchangable. I think mine mounts to the back of the speedometer

heres the back of my instrument panel and the voltage stabiliser is I think the little box on the back of the speedometer right one in the pic.

That is the voltage stabiliser, and yes they can cause odd faults.
Since you've chanegd the speedo but not the cable the ticking could be the speedo head. A drop of light oil into the cable mount might help.

speedo head was changed and a new cable was fitted as it had snapped the old one

Ok. I'd guess that the replacement speedo head is a bit dry - it must be 40+ years old now. I'd still suggest speedo head.

yeah I'll attack with some graphite grease, don't really want to use oil as it can get to places in the speedo where it would cause havoc by cappilary action
