Hello all just been pondering something. According to Jeremy Clarkson your not a true petrol head untill you've owned an Alpha. Does anyone think perhaps there may be other cryteria that proves you are a petrol head or are Alpha' s that good?

without being pedantic about spelling id say yes! i have never owned an alfa-romeo, yet ive owned feck knows how many cars, every time i try to recall when something happened in the past i never know, but if somene said 'you had the bmw/jag/mini at the time' id be like 'ah that was 2007' or whatever... i chose my flat cos its got a driveway, pretty much over anything else, theres spare parts under the bed, i never seem to have clean hands, and i find stuff like this... pretty awesome... as for alfa's... gotta be an SZ for me... or a 155...

They do have a certain appeal, I had a 145 with the flat four engine and it was one of the best cars I have owned, totally reliable,my mate had a 156 twin spark and it was a total dog! but on the odd day it ran correctly it was awesome.

i think the 2.5 155 is the only one i would own, i cant say its something i will buy though, much better cars for the money and although when working they are great I'm sure, its when they break i would worry.....alot.
Ive seen the bill for an alfa and it wasnt pretty in the slightest and it still went wrong

I'd say you need to own an Alfa, and there's a nice 156 in the classifieds would get you into the pain and ecstacy of owning one cheaply (shameless self publicity).

What I have noticed is since he said this, all the sheeple have rushed out to buy Alfas. Not to say they aren't some sexy machines, just that I feel that they've been brought down a level when he said this.

I've currently got a little Alfa spider 2000 Veloce up for sale, i hated the thing (rattley awfull build quality and not really that quick) that is untill i got it out on a country road with the top down where it was just amazing, i had my 911 SC at the time (so not short of fun cars) and this had me grinning like a loon, personally i think it's the fact that you will put up with all the grief of owning something as problematic, challenging and downright infuriating as an classic Alfa just for the few moments when it all comes together and is better than anything else in the world, that commitment, that's what makes you a real 'petrolhead'
That said, proper US musclecars, most Lotuses (Loti?), classic Citroens, 60's Jags, almost any V8 TVR, these are all cars that really are worth the frustration just for the few moments when they do what they do so well...
It's something that the Japanese and German enthusiasts will never 'get' that's not knocking them i love my German cars and respect the J stuff, it's just a completely different ownership experience...

My wife owns an Alfa 145 2.0 cloverleaf and its just such good fun even though its sad wheel drive. 150 BHP and a gorgeous soundtrack its so addictive to drive hard. When the body dies I my try to find a suitable rwd gearbox and get some tailout action

I'm into my japanese cars (mainly nissans) but I have a HUUUUGE soft spot for american muscle. personally i wouldnt like an alfa but give me some form of HEMI engined yank tank (or a mustang of course ) .

had a 146ti myself and adored it. Fantasticly quick steering and went very well too. Had the odd electrical gremlin though. I remember i had no speedo, rev counter, or electric windows for 6 days then they all decided to work again....

No idea, but I hope to own a Porsha and a Pherrari before I dye. Thankyou, for subtly putting what I was intending to put rather more bluntly! As alluded to, the true sign of a petrolhead is an absolute and profound disdain of any and all things uttered by that great buffoon, J. Clarkson. A true petrolhead not only despises the drivel he spouts, but is blissfully unaware of it having paid no attention in the first place. Having said that... I do rather adore my current whip, a "2001 156 V6 Veloce 6-sp Sportwagon", in Rosso Red with black leather.

Well I had a 75 V6, and I have to say it was amazing when it worked but it very rarely did... Great handling for a big car, sounded like a Ferrari, awesome chequered flag seats, boxy good looks but so many issues. The biggest shock was getting my 3.0 V6 on a dyno and pulling 91 bhp

Its not the actual car its the reason behind it. The reason to buy and Alfa and the ideals behind the heart and soul, its like care free motoring. Buying a car with your heart knowing that its gonna be riddled with faults is the future

I currently own a 147 1.6ts and love it! Although not retro it is a fun car to drive (espacially on country roads) and the soundtrack is VERY addictive!!

Had two, Alfa Sud Ti and a GTV V6 3.0 both back in the 80's, both quick and fun, both unreliable, both rotted as you looked at them, both had electrical gremlins. If I was to own another..... think the Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce would go down a treat

I think they should give traffic police V6 Alfas - might cheer the miserable swine up a bit more than driving a diesel BMW all day - you can't drive an Alfa without redlining it and smiling.

My old man had about six of them consecutively while i was growing up so i have a massive soft spot for them.
It's the noise, the looks and the handling. All the kids at my school were jealous when my old man would pick me up in the black sprint cloverleaf.
Having said that I would consider myself a true petrolhead and I've never owned one. It's a typically Clarkson completely (intentionally) stupid and ignorant, sweeping statement when you think about it. You could spend your entire life driving Lancias, DeTomasos etc etc but if you've not owned an Alfa you're what?
