Update 13/11/11
Been real busy lately with very little time to spend on the barn find cars due to being busy in the garage getting jobs out for customers, Today was my day off so decided to go back into the garage and get my hands dirty ;D ;D ( we are all car nutters on here) I spent the whole day working on one of the 16 cars I bought
After some long thought on which car to start on first I decided it was going to be the Toyota Celica TA40 1979
So out she came....
A few pics of the TA40 from when I bought her
My first task was to turn the crank over by hand using a ratchet turning it clockwise and anti clockwise making sure the pistons were free before starting it up,,, after a few turns back n forth every thing was moving smoothly
at this stage I was so excited to get the celica started up, so I put a gallon of fresh petrol in the tank, good battery and gave it a turn but no luck
the fuel was just not getting through to the carburretors, I then decided to clean out the fuel lines by blowing some air from the compressor to clear out the lines, so I took of the hose from the fuel filter and compressed air down it with the fuel cap opened and did the same from the fuel filler neck but still no fuel getting through to the filter
At this point I just had to call my HERO ;D ;D me old man who has been working on old TOYOTAS since the age of 14
told him the story little did he think and got to the point, he told me there was a blockage in the fuel stack pipe in one of the bends trying to send fuel out from the tank.....
It was time to get underneath the celica now and put my old man to test once again ;D so we started to unbolt the straps that hold the tank....
Didnt take me long taking the tank out there was only 2 bolts holding the straps..
Next job was to take the fuel sender unit out the tank
There were 5 screws holding the unit, abit rusty but I got the mole grip on them and out it comes for inspection
Firstly what I done was tested if this was the cause to the problem of fuel not getting sent, so I put some air down the fuel stack pipe using my air gun to see if it would flow through but it just didnt
My old man was right once again ;D ;D the bend which he was talking about was the cause to the problem.
The stack pipe was blocked with black gunk or rust that had been sat in there from over the years... welding rod was used to clear out all the curse word in the line and after some hard feeding off the rod back and forth it eventually was all clear
and the tank was put back together
The clutch was also seized and felt abit hard at the pedal this time I got my old man under the car as it was a delicate job didnt want to snap any bolts etc which am very good at
.....
We managed to free of the cylinder too and the clutch is now working like its meant to, I can drive the car once again since its last been used in 1990
Starting from the back working our way to the front of the car it was time to see if there was any spark in the plugs so we tested each and every plug to see if there was any spark...
All four plugs had a spark
It was now time to fire the engine up after setting the points and getting the timing right, all the fuel lines were now working perfect, we managed to get the fuel upto the carrbs and now was time to see if she would fire up
Bare in mind this was the last time she was on the road and has not been started ever since..
HERES THE MOMENT OF TRUTH
