That must have been a stirring sight, Tony. Not to mention the sound.... The engines in these were a work of art. English-Electric two-stroke diesels with EIGHTEEN cylinders and three crankshafts chucking out 1650bhp. And each Deltic had two of them. The sound generated was quite unbelieveable.... Wish I'd been there to see that. Cheers for posting, buddy.

Awesome! I only know of these trains due to they're engines... something i discovered when studying at uni. ^^ that animation sums up the awesomeness of the engineering of these engines i think. I wonder if you could get one of these in a car...

Awesome!!
Went around the railway museum in your a few years ago, I think the most breathtaking thing is the scale! Stood at track level and seeing them tower above you, awe-inspiring.

Remember the days when sex was safe and motorsport was dangerous. Vintage bling always attracts pussy.

Went up to Shildon yesterday, they started the five running Deltics up together and the sound was awesome, even if it was only 7 of the ten powerplants running. Shame the mic on my digital camera couldn't cope with it.
Those photos of Gordon Highlander prove that it's not just retro cars that rot though.
Those trucks are cool too.

I wonder if you could get one of these in a car... Think you'd need to start with a big lorry, I'd be thinking an 8 wheel tipper truck ;D They're nearly 8 feet long, 7.5 feet high and almost 6 feet wide. Oh and they weigh in at 11 tons Figures from here

I think its one of those engines that hauls the Royal Scots train. It passed my house this afternoon. Does so once a week. Train tracks are just across the car park from my house. So get a good veiw of it. A few times that trains got a steam engine tho.

Originally designed for MTBs I think, amazing engines, Deltics. Derived from the WW2 Junkers Jumo 205 Aircraft Engine (yes, a flying diesel!!!). Napier did fit them to boats. Love the howl of the Deltic. As an aside, Commer made an opposed 3 cylinder diesel for their lorries. These are an interesting unit.

How about taking three Jag 2.7 diesel blocks, bolting them face to face, heavy chain around the three cranks, mill some ports in, superchargers and Bob's your uncle: car scale half-a-Deltic. Easy

No valve gear and no spark plugs!!! I think the only other diesel that could compete was the Twin Maybach engined Western Hydraulics. They howl wonderfully!!
