I ended up with CR500Dom's old Audo 90 Quattro, via cappuccinocruiser... Knew it needed a bit of work, but it was a giveaway price ;D and I thought it just right for my work hack... Had a quick ‘pre-MOT’ carried out... It needs a little more than first thought, needs: New offside front strut top mount New radiator Windscreen replaced Horn fixing (suspect steering wheel contacts) Nearside front door inoperable – suspect fettling required as door is a replacement Rear brake flexi hoses replacing Rear discs replacing Rear pads replacing Needs 4 tyres Annnd big dent in sill that may or may not fail an MOT depending on the tester, but quite weakened the sill (what caused the windscreen crack?) It may need the head gasket doing, but F-in-L mechanic doesn’t think so having done a bit of sniffing about. In any case there is a gasket set in the boot... It's gonna cost about £350 in parts plus the sill... The problem is that I have no free time at the moment (between family and work) - I am totally torn whether it's worth fixing or not... but I would feel so guilty about scrapping what could be a great car. I don't even really have time to strip it properly for parts (would just remove a few Ebay worthy bits). Plus I have to many cars at the moment... and nobody wanted my Scirocco (which wil suffer if it becomes my work hack). I really need guidance and wise words please

I can sympathise - when it gets to this kind of situation it's hard to know what to do. I hate scrapping cars, but sometimes if you don't have the time to do it and nobody else is interested, there isn't much choice... I'm not saying scrap it, but you have to weigh up how much it'd cost to do and if it's worth it. I'm going through a similar thing with my Volvo - needs about an hour's work and a 2nd hand strut for the MOT but I have no time or money to throw at it

Just realised, I should add that I in no way feel I was 'sold a pup' by Cappuccinocruiser! And have already asked if he he would rather have it back than me break/scrap it.

Hmmm... difficult one. Best thing to do is look how much it would cost to buy a working one with an MOT. If it's not significantly more then I'd get shot. I hate scrapping cars that are potentially useable but sometimes there's no option. It sounds like a lot of work unless the car is preyy mint otherwise. At the moment I'm having this dilemma with the 1987 B12 Sunny estate we have. It's engine is a bit shagged (burns lots of oil) and rattles on start up, it has a cracked headlight and two busted window winders and is pretty much worthless. But it's almost rust free, dead reliable and in remarkable shape for it's age. It's just have no use for it any more as a daily hack. It's not worth the cost/effort to fix to sell and if I don't fix it nobody will want it anyway so it's most likely to be heading to the scrapyard I'm almost tempted to grab the parts it needs and stick it in one of my sheds under a cover for a few years when it'll be old enough to be interesting and rare!

personally, I'd get rid to someone with the time and enthusiasm, something which I lack at the mo, otherwise I'd take it back and sort it If you break it, I would like the front brake system please.

If I break it, you can come and take any bits that take your fancy (unless those brakes will fit Mk1 Golfs etc )

Tricky call Midge. £350 is a lot of money when there's insurance and tax to pay and the car isn't going to be worth much afterwards. Since the parts are in demand you could break it and weigh the shell in.
Either that or it's time to hit the 'bay and snip up some cheap parts. Then it's just your time, a couple of weekends work I reckon.

I really need guidance and wise words please Screen was cracked before the Sill, Rock thrown up on the A13 Sill wont be Failure, , its not done anything to the shell as such (shut line are all even etc), It was a High kerb in a Petrol station at 2mph.... couldnt beleive it when I saw it Slide hammer should sort that. Top Mounts, They are RS2 "Blues" and about £27 each from VAG and an hour tops to change, don't be tempted to buy patterns or you will be changing them again in 3 months Screen....... is it insured ? if not, find one in the scrappy and ring round the local screen fitters to see if one will do the swap there, IE take the scrap one out and use it to replace the white one Discs, Pads and hoses...... ECP or GSF..... if you do repair it then Give me a PM...... you might need a trip up to Lincoln, but Finacially it will be worth it wheels and Tyres... anything Ford will fit.... set of Sierra wheels with legal Tyres would get it MOTed, Toyos that are on it cost me £140 for the set brand new fitted Which Rad has gone ? If its the auxillary one at the front then 22mm Copper Pipe to Bypass it or cap it off and take it out..... its over £100 new and isnt needed, a lot of the guys on the S2 Forum take them out with no ill effects, a standard 10v will not have any issues ;o) I understand the feeling "see what you can get another one for" but you wont get another one as good as that Mechanically..... it had everything replaced while I had it, bushes, top mounts, dampers, springs, Brakes, Calipers, clutch slave etc etc All of which you would have to do to another one you bought I`m sure it looks a lot worse than it actually is, well it was when I did the deal with Dave initially (And I still have the Golf I swapped for it as well if thats any consolation) PM me if you want to know anymore or want some help sourcing bits for it

Thats Condensate not coolant, its why the tank was put on there in the first place...... That water vapour from the crankcase and you would get it on anything, the tank is to keep it out of the oil and let it breath easier...... I told you that when you picked it up, and to not forget to drain it ;D

They don't seem to go for a great deal on ebay Cheap 'unand anotherI doubt that in terms of time it'd take long at all to sort the stuff needed. My dads Volvo 940 has a huge dent in the sill on one side which went through the test okay so that shouldn't be a problem. It's just a straight matter of wether it's worth spending the wedge to do it. Say £350 plus the cost of a ticket and you still have a car with a dented sill. You might be able to by one with MOT minus the dented sill for that and not have to do any work at all. How bad is the dent?

Been pricing up Offside front strut top mount - priced up a green one by mistake that is only £9.75 from Audi! Radiator fitting - Ebay will provide @£30 Windscreen - been quoted £110 (cash ;D ) Horn fixing – suspect steering wheel contacts Nearside front door inoperable – suspect fettling required as door is a replacement Rear brake flexi hoses replacing (£13.00 from GSF) Rear discs replacing (£43.00 from GSF) Rear pads replacing (£21.00 from GSF) Needs 4 tyres (can prob sort 2 matching pairs 'from stock' ) That's £230... Big dent in sill - it's the one of the passenger side (impact damage?) - F-in-L is MOT tester, and he said he would have to check the book on wether failure or not, just going from what he could see on my drive, not on up on ramp. And he estimated £100 to fix. Plus doming the head gasket It's the time... where does all the time go? (not looking for sympathy, 'cos it's choices we have made, but we have 2 year old twins, I have 2 jobs = 45hrs/week, wife works 20+ hrs/week, and we do that without putting the boys in childcare)

It also lost a lot of coolant and spat it out the exhaust. wasn't the cars fault, I just thrashed it to death
