so, I now own this- the ex-count pandamonium lada riva. read about its past HEREheres some general 'as I got it' shots- notice sill repairs for MOT. interior, a bit scruffy but not too bad. I kept the steering wheel out of the legnum as part of the deal, looks very at home in here, even with ghetto 'those bolts are too long' bodge at side of road to swap it for the other one! powaaaahhouse, complete with weber and K&N it came with spares too- a lot of them, inc. 3 sets of wheels. as part of the deal it came with fresh tax and ticket, so I could get straight on with making it how I wanted it rather than worrying about it needing anything for the test. overall, it has a few smallish issues and bodges to sort out, but nothing particularly bad or taxing to do, so I can get striaght on with my plans for it

first things first. rims and stance. id been offered some rims rims previously but had turned them down as I had no use for them, but once I knew I was getting the lada, I knew I had to have them. 7x13 ATS classics. a bit battered/kerbed, but superficially ok once tidied up a bit. they're were 4x100 VW fitment, lada is 4x98, but alan had included a set of wobble bolts in the boxes of bits with the lada, so that wasnt an issue. there was a couple of other issues though, one is the wheel locating bolts lada have that stick out of the face of the hubs and into a hole on the wheels. they're easy to get rid of though. you can just take them out, but then the hubs and drums/discs can move independently, but its obviously easier to have them bolted together rather than fiddling about when fitting wheels. so a countersink was added to the drums and some stainless countersunk allen bolts used- the other issue is centrebore sizes. oddly, they're about 56mm on the back so the wheels fit fine, but the fronts are 58, so they don't! (VW centrebore is 57.1mm) simple way(for me) to sort this is remove the hub- I found a rather dodgy broken bolt whilst doing that - anyway, throw hub in lathe, remove a mm off the OD of the hub snout- refit- I then swapped the stock lada 5mm wheel spacer that is fitted from the factory for a aftermarket 10mm one, because of caliper clearacne issues (the brakes are actually huge on these). I replaced that broken bolt whilst I was in there too-

youll see a peek of something else in that last pic too. its a pair of these- bugpack uprated shocks for a balljoint beetle. scored from the car boot a few weeks ago for a whole 3 quid. not bad to say they're almost new there 10mm longer than the stock ones but are a lot stiffer, and I need to make longer shock brackets for stock ones to stop them bottoming out, so i can just make em even longer to accomodate them. the top mounts are exactly the same, the bottom ones are 12mm instead of 10mm, so I just drilled em out. fitted (temporarily til I make the longer brackets)- then, I removed the bumpstops + mounts- and a few other bits from elsewhere on the suspension - I also unhooked the ARB, as it needs longer mounts making for it as the ends of it bottom out on the lower wishbones at the mo, and had to cut a bit out of the top of the upper wishbones so they don't bottom out on the inner wing. theyll be re-enforced a bit later on once I know the rest is all bang on.

I then swapped the 165/55R13 tyres off the lada steels onto the ATS, but found this in the process :-( its off being welded up now, should be ready to collect on monday. I proceeded to chuck the other 3 on anyway, and after that, it sits something like this- not bad so far. it needs wheel spacers, a tad more on the front and quite a lot on the rear. I'm quite happy with the ride height and rake though. especially as its now actually got more travel than it had before now ive binned the bumpstops and clearanced the wishbones. but I might need a sump guard methinks- ile knock one up when I reconnect the ARB.

Looks like a cracker. Can I ask roughly what she cost??? What plans have you got? i swapped it for my legnum. plans, well, depends how far i take it/how long i keep it. wheels and sus mods as covered, a bit of exhaust work, some tweaks to the rear sus(shocks and a adj. panhard), some engine tweaks/unbodges, maybe some different seats, some bodywork. I'm sure ile think of a few more things to do to it yet as well ;-)

When you rang me a few weeks back and told me about the deal, I really wasn't sure (more for your motives/justification than anything else) but I'm glad you did. It looks like the car will be heading in the direction all of us (well, certainly most of us) at A52 have been trying to push Alan for many months. Great work Dude - it's looking awesome already and it can only get better from here. Get that sumpguard made pronto though Bookmarked.

:/ That is the difference between Dez and I - Spare time and skill. I'm sure I'll be back in a few years, doing cool stuff with old cars, but for now I'll stick to watching other people do the stuff I'd like to be able to do/afford.

Alan, I just noticed the legendary Flymo washer jet repair cable is missing! That was such a cool feature - what happened to it? Oh, and I don't want you pining at the unit about how you miss the Lada - at least you'll be able to make it back & forth without getting regularly aquainted with the hard shoulder or hitching lifts on recovery trucks for future meets

Doubt I'll make it to A52 until next summer now.

Get that sumpguard made pronto though Bookmarked. you were right in what you said , i know that, but........ ive not got this far by being sensible :-p it was one of those things where id built it in my head, and just had to do it in the metal. circumstances made it happen too- the wheels falling into my lap, plus some other parts. and more importantly, i feel this thing is a lot more 'me' than the legnum. i actually really enjoy driving it, even if it is slower, noiser, less practical, and less comfortable. sumpguard will be addressed next week- after seeing the saga involved in changing a sump on a hungarian website (its basically an engine out job) its deffo top of the list! oh, and alans proficent in the use of zipties now, so his bodges are getting better

I'll be watching this progress with keen interest. It was this particular car that got me looking at Lada's on eBay and I like the looks of it with the new rims fitted...

Those wheels suit it really well. I'll be curious to see where this heads as it was always a favourite to read about when in Count's ownership.

I've always had a soft spot for this car. I'm really happy that it will now go in the right direction at an accelated rate It definitely has a good flywheel and clutch. I know this and drank champagne with Alan upon purchasing said flywheel ;D

I'm quite sure I posted this at the beginning of Count Pandamonium's thread, but I know exactly what you mean about getting a plan in your head. This was mine from a few years ago when I started using photoshop, needs a supercharger.
