Check under the battery tray and washer bottle - that one looks a bit crusty...they leak into the footwells. :/ Enginewise, you need the pick up pipe and sump off a 1.8 Manta but just about anything will go in *n

These days given the prices the above are fetching, it's cheaper to go to Yukspeed and get his fabricated stuff.

True.
If you stumble across a rotten Manta though, grab it.

When I was younger I used to drive a Chevette around fields, pretty sure that was a 1.6 stock, bit more poke than a 1.3... probably not what you're after though. I loved hooning around the fields in mine, great fun til it catched fire

Chevette's are fapping fantastic. In terms of 'drive-ability' they pwn just about anything from the same era & size. Wazz all over marginally smaller stuff like fiesta's and are (IMO) nicer to punt about in than a Mk2 escort. They just 'feel' good, even if they only have 1256cc of stock juciness shoving them along. Get it done.

I too am thinking about a nice little chevette.
I know of the old cliche that anything will fit if you have enough money, but how straight fit does the C20XE fit?
Has anyone done it or know anyone that can do it?
Also is there any GOOD Chevette specific forums? I've had a look around but nothing that seems to have active members.

I happen to know of a very cheap 1800 Manta engine (PM for details).... and I have in my possession a mate's nice-ish 1994 Astra 2.0i 8V which he doesn't want.... You could put a swift Chevette together with that lot! Not an XE, but would make a nice car....

Has anyone done it or know anyone that can do it? Also is there any GOOD Chevette specific forums? I've had a look around but nothing that seems to have active members. www.chevettes.com is active, just not a lot happening lately XE is a straightforward swap, but the cost of Bits and 1800 mantas are expensive as the same bits are used to fit the XE in anything RWD, especially escorts. You need from the Manta 1800: Engine mounts sump oil pick up Gearbox Water hoses Carlton has been mentioned before as a cheaper donor but not sure how "Drop in" everything is, the beauty of the Manta swap is that it is Bolt in Crossflows and Pintos are a common swap and cheaper and easier for bits I went Zetec SE in the quest for lightweight reliablity and Cheaper Donor engines than XE Nightmares went for Piazza Turbo And I have an engine and box (that may be available)if you are interested in doing the same Problem you have going too big/powerful is the standard axle, which is only good for 100hp you need to fit Manta A series axle to remain inside standard arches or Wider Arches and B series axle. Piazza axle will fit, but are like poor quality wobbly children's play pony do do and fetch big money now as many come with LSD as well Personally, a well built 1256 with side draught weber or similar and a decent Cam will be Ample...... Sort the handling with decent dampers and Springs and I`d be tempted to engineer a 5 speed box conversion and you`ll have a great fun, quick car A chevette or Kadett with 70-80hp is a proper tool you`ll embarrass a lot of Supposedly quicker stuff on the back roads... I currently have 37hp at the rear wheels ;D Car weighs 810kg Basically Tarmac rally spec suspension but a bit lower 175/50/13s on 7x13 wheels It will Hassle a properly quick Celica GT4 on the backroads on cornerspeed alone ;D When he can get the power down admittedly he disappears but as soon as the bends start I catch him right up again Great cars and cheap to mod/fix/buy/etc I would love a Mk1 escort....... but am not prepared to pay the premium when I can build a Kadett for a 1/4 of the price HTH Dom

A chevette or Kadett with 70-80hp is a proper tool you`ll embarrass a lot of Supposedly quicker stuff on the back roads... I've said that hundreds of times and no-one ever believes me! ;D A while back, my Uncle had a tuned 1256 Chevette with (I think) Bilstein suspension, wide alloys and Cavalier or Manta Recaros in. We went for a thrash 'round some local backroads and quite frankly, in terms of fun / performance-for-cash, it was by far the best car I've ever been in.

Oh Yes Lets do a Partly Hypothetical build to demonstrate Car £200 ATS Alloys with 185/60/13s £150 (Moomin for sale on here) Or Budget version....Golf GTI Steels and Tyres £40 scrappy 400lbs front springs, 220lbs rears -2"...... New £100 delivered (south yorkshire springs) Or (Budget) new fronts and put the old fronts on the rear with 1.5 coils removed Koni Adjustable dampers/Yellow Bilstiens 100euros SH delivered from Ebay.de Budget: Nova GTE Gas Rear dampers all round (but I would go for the Billys or Konis ) Quickrack 2.5 turns lock to lock, £75 new from TJM (Massive difference) Turn the top ball joints round for more Neg Camber Sikaflex the Voids in the Torque tube bush Thats the Chassis pretty much sorted If you want to go further then Poly bushes are about £250 for a full set and Turrets in the rear make a big difference too So before we touch the engine you have a Superb handling and looking RWD car for about £400 or less over purchase price ;D My Chassis has cost me even less than that with some careful shopping Engine work, would be Head porting and Cam mainly, with a decent exhaust and Filter on the stromberg for starters as for Gearbox..... ford Type 9 would be strong enough, or maybe cheap Mazda MX5 would make a sweet 5 speed conversion You then have a great handling car with decent enough power to weight ratio and 5 speed to make it nicer on the motorway/give it a bit more top end The majority of those mods would be Ideal for a "First car" and all the insurance headaches too.... most of them would be very hard to spot Get it done, you wont stop smiling......... I havent and I use mine pretty much every day including M-ways which isnt fun with a 4 speed box and tiny wheels ;D

hey I'm nearly finished putting an xe into a chevette heres a link to my progress so far www.chevettes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10688 it hasnt been updated for a while will do so in the next few days just got the last 10% to finish and it should be on the road. If you have any questions feel free to ask but dom has pretty much told you everything you need to know. Wish i had gone down his route now with an zetec but I'm not really into mixing manufactureres much and i also know a hell of alot about xe's so wanted to stick with them for the moment but if you are going to go down the xe route then i warn you it can be very expensive if you want to do everything properly! But even still for a 200bhp/tone track car i can really say its a waste of money! andy

Is there a vast difference between Kadett's and Chevettes 1.2's? I'm looking at running a Kadett saloon, and hoping in the future to plonk in something faster. Am I going to have any troubles?
