Right, so i still havent got a car yet and seeing as its been near on a week since i passed my test, i desperately want one now. So ive seen a rover 214 si for sale cheap and probably going to get it. Now i have a few questions, firstly, how easy are they to lower? can u get coilovers for them? or is it a chop the spring jobby? secondly, would it look alright on banded steelies? Thanks Nick P.s have some thank you pics

hallo mate, this is gna b a bit of a rubbishy pic-free post cos I'm at work, but if you mean my shape rover (see my avatar/or click on the link at the bottom of my post) they are good little cars! lowering wise you can springs easily, a -40mm spring drops them a nice amount, mine sits higher as its stripped. the rear suspension is the same as EG shape honda civics so u can get rear coilies, but the front is rover / honda concerto. as for banded steelies, I'm sure they would work! the wheels are honda civic fitment too 4x100 so lots of choice, will try and find some pics later! if you are on about the later bubble shape, same applies really, I'm just not as keen hope this helps!

I had the 416GSi that shape. I have fond memories. It went well, was economical enough and carried many mates to see many bands in comfort.

A thing I wrote about its predecessor a few years ago is here. Seems to irritate most Rover owners.

I would have thunk that a 1.4 would price you out of the insurace market. Sub 1000cc hatch all the way for a couple of years till that no claims builds up and/or you have thrown a few worthless bits of undesirable metal into fields, though hedges and up the back of 3 year old saloons.

I owned a 216SLi for a little while, had a D16 Honda engine in it. It went surpisingly well and well mega comfortable....... well until I cut the springs took 3 coils off in the end and it never looked low enough!

Mine - loads of little things to do for the MOT (plus 30mm springs and BRM rims), but she's been a great daily the past few years:

It's the bubble shaped one, 3 door aswell so the fronts take Honda concerto coilies and the back takes civic eg coilies? Would insurance be too bad if my dad (been driving for about 40 years) was a named driver on the policy?

There are far too many variables to say.. If you're keeping it standard, then get on goconfusethemeerkat.com, but if you're going to mod it, you'll need to get on the phone to some brokers

The bubbles are used extensively in rallying, I'm on the look out for one myself having crashed the Metro If you decide not to get it I'd be interested in know more about it and the seller, especially if it doesn't have a sunroof!! The bubble 200 retained the same front suspension as the R8 wedge. The rear is somekind of beam/torsion bar setup. You can definitley get coil overs for them. *The* people to talk to about bubbles, especially if you have any interest in a motorsport setup, are Jamie and Owen Turner at the Rover Centre in St Albans. Geniuely *nice chaps* and very helpful on the end of the phone or email. If you want to know what to look for mechnically let me know...

BRM=180 bhp=LOTS of smiles!! 180bhp? More like 145 isn't it? Even the most powerful VVC is quoted as 160PS and that came after the BRM.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

BRM and Vi were 147iirc later ZR160 with mild tweeks were 160 (ish)
Bubble has a great chassis out the box, I've had a few bubbles in my time last one was lowered 40mm on 18s and a ZR replica (I miss that one)
Just over a year after passing my test I got a Nightfire Red 214si was only 4 years old at the time and cost a small fortune again lowered 50mm (Pi springs) on 17s, as the bubble has massive arch's to try fill.

I knew the VVC came in two versions, the semi-skimmed 145, and I thought the full fat was 180, but now you mention it, 160 rings a bell. Sorry about that....have a few pics as penance...

I bought a J plate 214si off my brother in law many moons ago. I decided on a spring chop but should have really weighed the job up first. The springs on mine were conical by which I mean they tapered in at the top and bottom of the spring and when cut hung out of the spring cups dangerously. The saving grace was that a G MAX shock and spring kit was only £120 at the time (2001 maybe).
Anyway, proper good little cars and mine was quicker than my mates civic coupe even when it was 'four up'
