The problem with early Reliant Scimitars going up in flames was actually due to the brass fitment that the main feed fuel hose was connected to used to come out of the carb and spray petrol everywhere. This was cured by Reliant Dealers by actually pinning the brass pipe in the carb to stop it falling out. Always worth checking yours is pinned!! never heard of the scimitar problem then? petrol pipe falls off carb, pumps fuel over exhaust manifold and torches car. I think you used to get £150 off of your insurance if you modded the carb fitting so the pipe stayed where it should. i have heard of that 'problem' before, but never heard of anyone who has experianced it, i think its abit of an old wives tail personally as surly any other car with the essex would suffer from it? when the SU float chamber on the kitten overflows it runs out of a little hole, onto the catch tray reliant fitted (!!) which funnels it onto the bellhousing, which runs it onto my exhaust where it smells funny, but doesnt catch fire, and that on my tubular manifold, which gets pretty warm (you can melt most forms of plastic on the tail pipe which is only about 3ft from the 4-1 collector. still, which skimp on somthing that costs peanuts anyway - your talking about £12 for loads of copper pipe... how much would the scrappy charge, £11.99?

Lotus had a similar problem with (no idea which) engine... the carb being above the dizzy. again, spark not heat.
and, please nobody buy second hand fuel line - as the pog nick said: 'nev'r curse word wit fuel ont diz, ta'
you'd have to be a cocksnogger to do that.

ive never heard of fuel catching fire from hitting exhaust, the vapour needs a spark to ignite, diesel however, and other oil based stuff, brake/clutch fluid will catch fire on exhaust manifold! altho ive never seen engine oil catch fire.....yet....
