How did I miss this? This looks great! Love the project after reading it from start to finish . One thing I wish to ask is how did you go about converting your speedometer to a stepper motor?

Thanks, i'm pleased with the way its going at the moment, I cheated with the speedo and got a grown up to do the conversion. Speedy cables did the work. I did look at using lexus speedo internals behind the rover dial but the sweep angles were wrong. It's the one time i took the easy route. With hindsight i think i would try to do a conversion myself, it doesnt feel in keeping with the spirit of the rest of the car.

Nice to see an update!
What are your plans for the brakes?

Nice to see an update! What are your plans for the brakes? The brakes had a complete overhaul not long before i started the engine swap. I found them more than up to the job so have no plans of anything major. The rear drums will go to be replaced with vented discs when the jensen rear axle goes on. It would be cost rather than stopping power that dictates a swap, the rover discs are getting expensive - nowhere near as expensive as the jensen brake parts though.

Final pictures of the car before i connect the battery tomorrow and it goes up in flames The additional wiring needs covering, and a couple of other bits need power to them, speed sensor, power mode for the gearbox, but its near enough to see if it runs, Bonnet fits over the air filter ok. Thats been a nagging doubt for the last few weeks, Hope to be driving it out of its home where its been for just short of two years. Watch this space for the result on sunday night.............

Or a dodgy signal from the crank sensor?

Or a dodgy signal from the crank sensor? I second that. My thoughts were crank or cam sensor. I tried to put the ecu in test mode to pull any fault codes out of it but discovered it wont show any. It should give you the codes in a mix of morse code and semaphor using flashes and spaces of the engine management light. The light is powered up and the ecu grounds it to give you a flash, which it is not doing so had to be a knackered transistor in the ecu. I opened it up to be greated by a capacitor relieving itself all over a bank of transistors. ECU will need replacing or repair. Will make some calls tomorrow. I've also been round all the injectors firing the coils with a 9v battery to find 7 out of the 8 stuck. They are all freed off now. Have also had a pressure gauge on the fuel line to find its way too high and the pump spec is too much for the fuel system to cope with. Must have had a moment when i specced that A more suitable pump has been ordered. The engine was bought blind and has been sat for two years so a few problems are to be expected. Its a bit disheartening but the sound when it does run for those couple of seconds makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and your ears bleed. ;D Its going to be sooooooo worth it.

Tough break dude.
Do you have an oscilloscope to watch the output from the crank/cam sensors?
I know someone that can fix the ecu...

Tough break dude. Do you have an oscilloscope to watch the output from the crank/cam sensors? I know someone that can fix the ecu... I have a known good ecu on the way, if that doesnt work i'll be on the lookout for an oscilloscope to borrow. I spoke to a couple of places about repairing the ecu, biggest problem seems to be testing the ecu after. They were all prepared to replace faulty components but couldnt guarentee the work. Second hand ecu was same price as quotes for repair. Can your contact test the ecu? If they can i would be seriously interested.

He cant test the ecu fully - I'd guess you need some sorta BMW-only kit for that.
He is ridiculously cheap though. Might be worth getting it fixed and trying it on the car once its running. If it works you can flog it on and recover some money.

If you need help with your ECU this company should be able to help. I worked with this company 20 years ago and they could test your ecu via the phone line through dedicated service agents, Not sure of that now but could be worth a call. Hope it gets going soon, cant wait for the results. Steve. www.atpelectronics.co.uk/pages/products.html
