	Hi, I have a chance to buy a 2000 model 156 tiptronic for a cheap price. The catch is the box will only select 1st, 2nd and reverse. The owner changed the engine for whatever reason, for a second hand lump which runs well, but since fitting the new motor, this problem with the box is present. Likely to be something simple-ish, a known problem or a world of pain? Bear in mind that I don't like electronics.

	Alfa's 'selespeed' system (fitted to 2.0 litre cars) is known for getting a bit forgetful with age. It can be as simple as a weak battery or sometimes the connecting rods from the selespeed robot (yes really!) can get out of adjustment. Both fairly simple to sort out. If the selespeed ecu is fubared then you can get 2nd hand replacements I think. If the car is a 2.5 then it'll have the Qsystem box which is a whole different kettle of fish and they rarely give any bother.
