Had a look at a mondeo tonight and there was a sort of whining/squealing noise coming from the belts area (looking into the engine bay, its on the left). I need to know if this is the timing belt or alternator belt, so does the timing belt make such a noise? (the alternator belt was shiny ) Really like the car, but need to figure this out first Also if it IS the timing belt, how much do these usually cost including fitting (its the 2.0 zetec-e)

Its prob most likely the aux belt than the timing belt as aux belts are v belts which have a higher potential to slip which causes the squealing. I would be better to change the aux belt first as it is the cheapest part to buy. If the sound is still there then consider to change the timing, although timing should be changed at manufacturers recommendations which is usually 60k miles. Hope this helps

Mine didn't do that, so it's not a 'feature': something's wrong.
Possibly the bearings in the alternator/waterpump/timing belt tensioners. These have poly-vee aux belts and, IIRC, automatic tensioners, so the aux belt shouldn't slip unless it's knackered. Take the alternator belt off and see if it still does it.
If it does still make the noise, it's probably the timing belt tensioners (the belt may have been replaced in the past leaving the old tensioners - not a very good plan really).
If not, spin the alternator/waterpump/etc. by hand to see if one of them is rough.
Doesn't help you make a descision though. Are there any receipts with the car?
A timing belt kit is around £45-50. I'm afraid I don't know how long the book time for the belt is.

it has a stamp in the service book for a service and timing belt, but that was in 2007 (and 30000 miles ago), but it doesnt say anything about the tensioner. The thing is that I really like the car (its the ghia X version, so has everything) but I don't want to have to pay another couple of hundred quid straight away.
I really only want the car as a winter hack as the panda is going to give up if its used

If the Zetec-Es are like the early Zetecs (Silver Tops with DOHC or 16v Zetec written on them) the tensioning on the cambelt is done automatically with one or two springs IIRC. Whenever I have seen a squeal on a Zetec it tends to be due to an old belt. It is a constant pitch or does it rise in pitch (a little like a supercharger) when revved?
I would say £300 for changing the belt on them, but I understand that bar taking the engine mount off they are not too awkward to change, but a little tedious. Ensure however that you have a cam locking tool (fits in the flywheel side of the cams), potentially a new cam cover gasket, and threadlock (for the camshaft sprocket bolts (they are not on a woodruff key). Oh, and that you cambelt kit comes with the two springs.
This is what my mechanic told me when I was considering keeping my grandad's Escort last year (the timing belt on that was last changed in 1999!). I guess he was telling me that after changing the cambelt on the 205 and GTi-6 (latter he claims is awful to change).
