not an easy car to strip down. the internal panels at the front all need to be unrivited to allow the suspension and steering rack to be removed these cars really were poorly put together. thing is now that it'll be wrong to improve it so it'll be put back together with the same poor welds and the same poor finish. just neet to make it reliable and not overheat as it will get used quite a bit. no point doing all this work for it to just sit around ;D rear is now deflared and one side mould made. more pics soon

Its fascinating watching this progress The kind of info, images and experience you just don't get via a magazine. not an easy car to strip down. the internal panels at the front all need to be unrivited to allow the suspension and steering rack to be removed Would that be the same as on the race cars? It seems strange to me that it would be difficult to repair/replace components that could get damaged on track during, say, a 24hour race.

the MK3's were made slightly different. the race cars have huge ducts under the front for the brakes which this road car doesn't have. they were filled in with panels i suppose to make it useable as a sort of boot. otherwise the only storage area is the box in the back which meant that the tail needed to be eight inches longer than the previous GT40. the headlights were raised for the American market, so these changed looks are for a purpose more than just to make it look a little different. Mayhem in Manhatten is a little write up about the GT40 MK3 back in '67

Wow, mega snazzy workshop too. I like how the rear suspension is mounted direct to the gearbox, proper race car tech.

the rear suspension is actually mounted to the chassis very close to the gearbox. the drive shafts are mounted to a rubber doughnut on the gearbox to act as torque damper and allow articulation. on the MK3 suspension arms the inner joints are rubber and the outer ones rose jointed where as the race cars are rose jointed both ends. link to all the GT40 chassis numbers and history

if you look at the front suspension you will see that the forward most anchor points are further in towards the centre of the car. a lot of kit cars have them parallel. the point of having them angled in like that is so they work as an anti-dive under heavy braking.

Magnesium bodied MK7. the size of a small bus yet fairly light. an absolute hoot to drive Is this Rowan Atkinson's car? Either way I've seen him and I think Stirling Moss race it.
