Hi Been saving up for a nice barge for quite a while now and I'm trying to decide what I want. Come across a nice E32 which I posted in the luxo-barge thread, but it got me thinking about getting one myself. The 735 is good for 20 mpg round town and 30 on a cruise, has 200+ bhp, and all the toys you'd expect, plus their a sporty drive for a limo, I borrowed one of a mate once Anyone got any pics of modded ones? Can't help but think they'd look ace on some Style 5's with a subtle drop, tints and some de-chroming... Anyone had one, know what their like to live with? Ta ;D

That one on the left (white on Cross Spokes) looks spot on . Always a great colour for an E32. Here is what I found on my travels: The Daddy? Aquired taste: Am I bad for liking this a little?:

Is that top one a Hartge? That looks mint I was looking at E/S-Class Mercs, but the 7-series I lent was so much sportier, I've only just realised how cheap they are these days... This is the one I posted in that other thread, looks f**king immaculate; www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1991-BMW-735-S....=item43a9baf4ac

. It's funny this thread has come up, I've been currently scouring ebay/gumtree/autotrader for another E32. I stupidly sold both of my E32s at the start of this year. Why? I thought they weren't going any further than I had already taken them. 8-9 months later and a series of problematic and uninspiring motors later and I'm really kicking myself. E32s are fantastic cars. Spacious, luxury, plush, power and great build quality. In my opinion, their only fault is economy. You can buy minters for under £500, both of mine as Robin pictured were bought for the total of £750 . Their best feature? They take slamming extremely well! It seems the suspension and underside components are very well tucked. The white one was a 735i SE auto, the black one was a Japanese import 735i which had been converted to manual by some of the Driftworks crew. I actually preferred the auto to be honest! The 3.5 straight 6 is a great engine. And now for some self whoring... The white one Dirt drop at RRG'09 ;D The black one I took it drifting at Mallory near Xmas, drifting in the snow! And both of them Since I've sold them both and I've been pining for a new one, meet their replacement... E23 728i manual I apologise for my long post, I just love E32s!

I shall admit, while my XJ40 XJR was brilliant to drive (bar the 'box, IMO the engine's spec (Remapped ECU, Fancy inlet manifold, high lift Inlet cam, fancy exhaust as factory spec) demanded a manual box) with it being a little less 'squishy' than a normal 40, the E32 730i I drove surprised me!
I thought it would be an underpowered heap (it pulled well) but there was something about the purr/burble in addition to the comfort inside (electric headrests anyone and mega comfy seats?). As above, the MPG was terrible. With a light right foot I struggled to get more than 22MPG on a run. 18MPG was possible around town. I thought it was due to the engine, but I see others are not much better. The XJ40 with care would do 20MPG around town and around 30MPG on a run (The AJ6 was designed with economy in mind though, probably why they are not a massively tunable engine)!
To be fair, the 944 S2 of mine did 24MPG in mixed conditions and that was a 3.0 4 pot!

In comment to the above, I was averaging 22mpg to a tank of fuel. On a run at 80mph with cruise on I averaged 30mpg, I nearly had a heart attack with surprise with how little fuel it used!

I'm going to have a whore-post as well. I'm manualling this 735: And I've had and driven/gathered an obscene amount of parts from these: The white one I used as a friends wedding car. It was a 730 auto, got about 19mpg from that using it to commute for a couple of months. The first green one was the first one I ever had, a 735 auto. It royally spazzed itself on the drive home, much to my chagrin. Luckily the black one came up a couple of weeks later. The engine from this one ended up going to a mate to put into his E30. The second green one was a very late but very low spec 730 auto. Drove lovely. Got about 21mpg from that. The low black one was a Lithuanian735 manual. Got it for parts as it had been hit. The silver one I got for the interior. It drove very well - it was another 735 auto. Can't remember what I was getting from it - possibly about 22/23mpg. The burgundy one, a 735 manual, I just got last week. The 'box from the Lithuanian car was rather rough, so this is the replacement drivetrain destined for my black one. Sourcing a manual V8 box is just taking too long, so I'll stick with the 3.5 for now and do some work to it. This one is an early (87) model so it has quite a few unusual parts, bits from the E23 (like Robs) and bits like the OBC that are completely different from the E23, AND from later E32s. Mechanically the same though. This car had been lying up in South Wales on a barn for 8 or more years. I had it collected, brought to Ireland, and, with a charged battery, it started and drove on ancient petrol and only a slightly sticky clutch pedal to show for its lay-up.

Hmm, fuel economy is worrying me a bit, maybe I worked it out wrong with the one I borrowed? Don't mind 18-20 round town because it's only a 7 mile round trip to work but I need high 20's on a run at least to make it do-able. Also, being reading some forums on the E32 and apparently it's prone to electrical gremlins and has NINE ecus, which scares the curse word out of me An E34 might be more sensible but I just love the look of the E32, can't believe a car that size can look sleek... Remember when fuel cost less than a quid a litre? I should have bought one then, but I was a teenager and insurance would have been £16200000000000000000 a month

I have owned one of these, a 740i, and it was amazing! Also a friend had a 735i which I drove a few times and that was spot on too. Definitely, definitely recommend having one.... Make sure you get one with the recaro seat option as they are much much nicer inside Engine wise for me it has to be the 740i! Economy isn't too bad for the size of car etc, I guess you could always LPG it if it's an issue.

I've had over 50 BMWs and yet to have anything more serious than a blown bulb. The amount I've got going after standing for years is astounding. About the only thing likely to go wrong is the light module, which drys out and the solder joints crack. If you're hugely unlucky the next most common (yet rare) ecu to go is the gearbox one - and that will be your cue to manual it!! The ACTUAL real problem that you'll have, if you have any, is their never-ending hunger for bushings and front suspension. But buy good ones, and you'll be ok for another few years.

My current daily is a 735 manual. Mine has an Alpina exhaust and chip and I'm getting 17-19mpg around town and 28-30 on a steady run at 70-80ish, so they're not bad for their size. Just needs a small drop and some all red rear lights now.

That seems do-able mpg wise, I would prefer an auto though, just seems to suit the car... Gonna have to speak to the insurance thieves as well, guessing that won't be cheap
