Since buying the capri the engine has been tappy and felt underpowered I finally got round to having a look and sorting the problem. I turned out that one of the rockers was past its best and had sideways movement. Sowhile my rocker covers were off I gave them a sand blast and repainted them, fitted a whole new rocker shaft and rockers, I think the one that failed was due to oil starvation. I put it all back together today along with a fresh set of plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotar arm. Here are some pics. Before I started. Rocker covers off. Dry rockers. Before blasting. After blasting. Freshly painted. Service parts and newly fitted second hand accoustic shelf. next job, oil and filter change.

Ok so after changing the oil I went for a drive and after about 30 miles the ratteling came back just as bad as before. So I took the rocker covers off again and the same had happened again. The front two rockers were dry. I decided to strip down the rocker shaft that was origionaly fitted and the 1 I just fitted. Both shafts were worn causing the rockers to rattle on the shaft and not rock on them smoothly. This was caused by the oilways being blocked. So rather than just fit the last spare used rocker shaft I had I decided to strip that one as well and buy a pair of new rocker shafts. I then picked the best of the rockers that weren't worn and built 1 good one. Then fit it all back together. After It all went back together I then went on another test drive, and gues what? Yep you got it, it did the same again, when I removed the rocker covers to have a look it was exactly the same, the two front rockers were dry as a bone, yet the rocker shaft was brand new. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is doing this?

From memory i think the oil for the rocker tube is supplyed by the center rocker tower so if it's reaching the back it should reach the front? Do the new shafts have the feed holes for the rockers at the front? looks like they do from the pic, it's basicly forced up into the rocker shaft and just dribbles out into the rockers? usually it's the whole shaft that's dry not individuall rockers? check the main feed is clear it could be blocked and there's not enough pressure to reach the front which is higher than the rear i think as the engine tilits back slightly ?

Your right about the oil supply coming up in the middle, and yeah there are 2 feed holes for every rocker, 1 on top and 1 on the bottom, my oil pressure is lower than other 2.8i capri's I've had in the past. But the fact that the rocker shaft on the other head is getting oil ok and the rocker shaft on the dodgy side is getting oil I thought it might not be a pressure problem.
I might try a new oil pump, see if that helps.
Cheers for the reply.

Since I have had the Capri the bonnet has been the worst panel by far, so I have finally had it painted, I wanted satin black, but it came out gloss. So as soon as my mate has time he is going to redo it satin, but it has made it look alot better. before. after.

So my engine has been rattling since I bought the Capri, and several attempts of fixing it have all failed. So I bought a replacement engine from ebay, here is how it turned up. Next step was to put the engine on a stand. Then I gave it a quick clean. Next I painted the engine.

While the engine was drying I removed the old engine from the car. While the engine is out I have put in a new clutch and throttle cable.

So with the old engine out I realised there were a few differences between the two engines. So I set about swapping across all the bits that were needed from the old engine. I fitted new front and rear oil seals, new water pump, new inlet manifold gasket, new water seals behind the timing cover and timing cover gaskets, new sump gasket, new rocker cover gasket and the rocker covers from my original engine. Hopefully I wont need to pull the engine out again once its in. Here is a pic of the engine all nearly ready to be put back in.

So today I started bolting bits back on and plumbing it back up. I also drilled my air box, seeing as it has a full janspeed stainless system manifold back and a K+N panel filter I thought it might help it breath a little easier.

Engine back in and all plumbed in, and it started first time. Just have an oil leak to sort from the oil cooler tomorrow.

So I sorted the oil leak with a new o ring, Then took the car to classic ford show and everything seamed ok. The engine had a little tick so on Saturday I decided to adjust the tappets, I found 1 that needed adjustment so hopefully the tick will have gone. But when I went to start it to see if it had gone it wouldn't start.
It has now lost spark. I turns out there wasn't even spark from the coil. I checked the coil and the resistance was out of the guidelines so I bought a new 1 today. Fitted the new coil and there is still no spark.
Anyone got any ideas?

So I fitted the new coil, still no spark. Checked the ballast resistor and that was fine. I am trying to source an ignition module now to try. Hopefully its that.

Do you have power at the module? I reckon it will be an iffy connection.
A nice read and it sounds like you have having fun with it!
