Sooooo I'm now 20 with a reasonable pay check every month, so there must be some different cars to have fun with. What I would love is some sort of estate, rear wheel drive, or coupe, or whatever. So here, get your creative cheapo juices flowing! Thanks!

Funny, looking into the same thing at the moment. Only cheap ones seem to be 2/7/940s. Merc w124s seem to be climbing in price now but how about this for an interesting choice? Could find a cheap one off an old biddie?

none of these suggestions seem like they will be cheap on insurance though?
I'm watching a Lada Niva estate on eBay which should be cheap to insure. Its rapidly rising out of my bid price zone though

As someone in a similar situation if you want to get cheapish insurance on a bigger engined car it needs to be old. Id say at least 25 if not 30years old so that you can get classic insurance

Cortina MKIII, IV or V ? Plenty of engine choices from 1.3 Kent to 2.3 V6.

I was going to get a W124 but decent ones now are commanding more of a premium by the day it seems.
While 740s have crept up in value (and reasonable to insure) the 850s are now cheapish.
Truth is IMO, it is harder to get good cheap cars compared to before.

I'm leaning towards a 740 tbh, good for carrying a load of friends and junk around the countryside. But man that 505 takes me back to holidays in France as a kid!

Some of the 940's are group 12, my turbo is group 14, Wentworths and Sports are 16 i think. its about the same as sporty fiestas and the like, an older 740 could probably go on cherished vehicle insurance.

I replaced my E reg 240 GL with a G reg 740 SE. The 240 was a far nicer car and regret changing. Both had the 2.0 injection engine but 240 was faster and more economical despite having done double the mileage of the 740. FWIW 240 was Swedish made whereas the 740 was Beligian made and mine was starting to rust badly underneath. I've have another 240 but not a 740. Not sure if the 940 any better.

I'm not quite as young as you but I had similar insurance problems last time out... My Civic vti insurance went sky high and I ended up with a B3 Passat estate. It was about the cheapest way of getting a big commuter. 47mpg helped

Not sure if the 940 any better. Paul H If it helps my 940 is 14 years old and has done over a quarter of a million miles, no rust anywhere i can find, currently it has a cracked exhaust manifold and the aircon isnt blowing very cold, other than that everything works and it drives perfectly, steering wheel and gearknob are going shiny but the seats are not worn.
