Hi folks, i'm looking for some advice about wiring up an engine from a late model scorpio. I'm looking at the 2.016v DOHC which has the pats security which I think will be the same as the 24v?? Situation is I can get the whole car to strip which is good, but knowing the size and complexity of a scorpio's loom i'm reluctant to try and strip the whole thing. I believe i'm right in saying the pats system needs to use the ecu, the key and some sort of sensor on the column? So has anyone done this or similar without using the whole scorpio loom? Any advice is welcome as i'm a bit clueless here

Scorpio looms are all prety modular, separate harnesses for engine, body, ABS etc and the PATS sensor ring (on the column) goes into the ECU wiring so you should be ok. Label carefully any wires you have to cut, but it's straightforward.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

ps, If you would like the loom and ECU from a 2.0i DOHC sierra that has no PATS and will run fine with no cat I'm only a PM away

Hi mate, thanks for the reply, will a earlier dohc 8v ecu and loom do the job? I was wondering about going that route, do away with pats altogether. If i do that do i just need the engine bay loom from the scorpio to go with the engine? Meaning can i leave the main loom in the car?

Well, I've had a zetec running on an 8v DOHC loom, so I can't see the scorpo lump having any particular problems, only thing I had to do was adapt the ignition side to suit a coilpack rather than a distributor (easy with EDIS).. does the 16v DOHC still use a distributor on the front of the cam case? even easier if it does. I'd keep as much donor wiring as possible. even if you don't use it it weighs in fairly well

a lot of people just tape the sensor & the key to the ecu & hide them behind the dash

Use a cable tie rather than tape if you are going to do that. We had a non-running Nissan brought into the garage the other week, fault was eventually traced to a replacement ignition barrel and key - instead of swapping the key chips around someone had taped the old key to the sensor ring and left them in the column shroud. This had worked fine (for god knows how long) but eventually the tape softened and the key fell out of it.

Love it. Never imagined people would implement that sort of solution. Where there's a will there's a way it seems. Agree, anyone thinking of implementing that sort of solution should bear in mind tape tends to give way at some point. Either sooner or later. Cable ties are much more robust.... and that's the only time you're going to read that... so enjoy it.
