Been offered an mot'd and taxed k10 micro for £50 in good nick and am buying it as a winter car/spare car for me and the missus. She has an mx5 and I have my capri and neither of which are particularly suited to winters like last years plus mine is off the road a fair bit so a spare cheapy would be useful. We what be putting much mileage on it due to the other cars but I've looked through the broker sites (compare, confused etc) and the cheapest quote is about £370... Now that seems too much for an old micro that's worth pittance and is hardly used - it's more than I pay for my 300bhp Capri! I was wondering if anyone knows of a good company or a good scheme for 'spare' cars? I'm site a lot of you guys have a banger or two waiting in the wings to take over from a stricken daily! Advice muchos appreciated!

Well.. Sounds ok if it's your only car but its gonna be sat doin nothing for most of the year and like I said, it's more expensive than my turbo capri to insure which seems a bit silly. If there are no policies designed for this sort of usage then I guess I'll have to go with it but it kind of makes me wonder if it's worth it at all! I mean having a couple of cheapish policies adds up to the same amount as an expensive one!

Some days you just need to take a grinder to an inanimate object, just to make your day a tiny bit better!!

it sounds about right to me. their thinking is if its modified with expensive mods youre going to look after it. if its a sh1tty old nail youve obviously bought to use in the icy weather to save your good car, youre far more likely to have an accident in it, and not give a sh1t about how its treated either.
case in point- i bought a bone stock b3 passat estate for 300 quid. they wanted 500 odd to insure it. if i lowered it on coilovers and fitted alloys and a stereo, upping its value to 800, the quote went down to 350, for the reason given above.

So basically your saying slam it on banded steels, roll cage and bike carbs and jobs a goodun? I'll call a few insurers on my lunch tomorrow and see if I can get a decent quote I guess, maybe chatting to someone on the phone may be more useful than using the interwebs

Other reason for cheap insurance is probably down to your Cappa being on a classic policy. Most will assume you will not use it daily and generally treat it with respect, making it a low risk policy. Either way, good call on the Micra .
