'56 Chevy's tail-light/fuel-filler: A fuel filler venting vapour next to an electric bulb, what could possibly go wrong? I've always liked glove compartment lids that turn into picnic tables. It's not until you have a car that doesn't do this that you miss it.

"Back in the day" I think quite a lot of race cars were built with chassis tubes that doubled as water pipes to/from radiators. I really like that strut brace though. Really good thinking. Could do something similar as an oil breather/catch can.

There's something niggling in the back of my mind about some suicidal old design in which a rollcage doubled as a fuel tank, but I can't find evidence of it. Sounds like a Smokey Yunick idea.

Sounds like a Smokey Yunick idea. i think your right y'know.i read about it when during scrutineering they removed the fuel tank and the car managed to drive off!didnt the same guy also make his cars 4/5ths scale,no one could tell until another parked along side.

i read about it when during scrutineering they removed the fuel tank and the car managed to drive off! I think that was another rulebending incident, in which the size of the fuel tank was regulated but the length of the fuel lines wasn't, so he fitted absurdly long fuel lines that held a couple of gallons. Or something.

I've heard that it's becoming more common practice to use the frame on motorbikes for fluid storage.

I think the story goes that the scrutineers were suspicious as to the size of his tank so had taken it out to measure it. Then the car was driven back to the pit without the fuel tank....

To keep the lines nice and clean, Ford did much the same as Chevy and hid the fuel filler, but instead of putting it behind a light they put it behind the rear number plate which was hinged. Clever stuff and practical too since you don't then need to worry which side the fuel flap is on at the pumps.

My Dad had a '48 Cadillac that had a fuel filler behind the rear lens. Why don't they do clever stuff like this anymore?
