After getting back from RRG11, I was full of inspiration both for finishing my current projects, and for getting another one - some kind of track car. Much was talked about over the weekend as we sat on the bank watching the cars blast up the hill. My criteria was pretty loose - it had to be cheap, manual and make reasonable power but aside from that I was open to most things. A few weeks later, I spied an ideal candidate on this here forum, and a few PMs later it was mine! It may look familiar to some... ;D Me and my bro borrowed a trailer and set off 100 miles to Castle Pollitt, to relieve him of this "hateful car" (his words). It does have a problem, which seems to be related to the automatic gearbox. No matter, because last night I snagged this on eBay for beer money... ^ Mercedes Cosworth 2.3-16 dogleg gearbox. With a bit of work it should marry up to the M111 engine. In theory. ^ Engine should be sweet with only 28k miles on it. We managed a quick look around the car, and it seems ideal! It will be getting stripped, lowered and most probably painted. I'm hoping this is going to be a quick turnaround as I have the other Merc and the Bond to finish! Once I've gathered together the manual conversion parts I'll just hit it I think.

Yay! Weigh cat in instantly for a healthy project total cost reduction. Weight saving on big cars is incredibly good fun. Everything is desperately heavy.

Can't wait to see this being used hard! Are the sharpie graphics staying? ^ Mercedes Cosworth 2.3-16 dogleg gearbox. With a bit of work it should marry up to the M111 engine. In theory. I love the "In theory" bit ;D

Thanks for the encouragement! ;D It'll be a quick and fun project... I hope. The Sharpie graphics will be going I'm afraid - the car will more than likely get a lick of paint at some stage. I want to keep the car road-legal so the cat will have to stay (I think?) along with some other fun-killing things but it should still be a cheap project.
I've started a Reader's Rides thread on it, although work won't commence for a while yet.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

You crazy foooool! The Pollitt has owned that! actually that probably means it'll be amazing because his curse with mercedes only applies whilst in his ownership i believe. You'll probably find the auto box now works fine as well lol ;D

Good project! I think those gearboxes are fairly in demand as they bolt onto the OM605/606 engines which are a popular conversion.
Would it not be easier to just find a gearbox that was fitted to the M111 in the first place?!

Cheers guys! Aha so it was you I spotted on the M5 on sunday! I did give you a toot, I was in an incredibly grubby looking Blue & Grey delica l400. Ah, I think I saw you come by. I'd have waved / tooted had I known it was a RR'er! The trailer was a bit of a handful at times with the side-winds. BigPerm, PM will definitely be coming your way! Skinnylew, I'll see if the Curse Of The Pollitt has been lifted when I get a battery on the car, but I suspect it's very broken. Mark - I might yet source a W202 manual box and the rest of it. The thing that puts me off is shelling out for a dual mass flywheel - used ones are an unknown quantity, and new ones are pricey. Prey, there will be some spannering going on at some point, but not sure when yet! I'll keep you posted.

mark said what i was about to bud!!....... might be a big pain/spend getting the getrag in there for no apparent gain or advantage, it appears to me that my c220 ,my old c280 ..and all c230s had the same manual box in near enough , forgive me but no part numbers on me at the mo ... due to the fact i blew my box apart on the c220 about 2 years ago (way way too much sideways ;D)..i disposed of the dual mass , and fitted the flywheel, clutch, release bearing and gearbox from an earlier c200, about m reg i do believe , anyway no probs since and a definate different driving experience , it feels much more fruity, only disadvantage is it hunts a bit on tickover sometimes, although if you are on a trackday just tell everyone you have been experimenting with cams and ecu's and they think you're somekind of driving/mechanical hero ;D ;D..shhhhhh!!!
