Yes the time has come, the e30 is just too small and a bigger estate is needed. I have had an eye for the 850 estate for a while but as its fwd its been on the bottom of the list, until now. So, what advice can anyone offer me on what to look for when buying? I will ideally be going for a t5 model, but my budget is £1000 max. Yes, Iknow.....will be hard too find a decent low mileage example but unfortunately thats all I have to play with. With love and care and a little dosh, surely a sub standard estate will end up driving and looking COOL
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Gav

I bought a v70 for the exact same reason - the e30 we had didn't really work with buggies/other stuff! I considered a t5, but the insurance kinda killed that idea - and ended up getting a 2.5tdi auto! for carrying kids/stuff it's great.

You'll be hard pressed to spend a grand on an 850 t5, they're that cheap at the moment, I would suggest signing up to vpcuk.org, theres always some good ones for sale on there and the members will steer you away from the junk

i had a T5 estate about 2 years ago, it was Awsome and i really meen that, mine was the auto and it had 18 inch alloys, lowered suspension and a front Volvo t5r strut brace, went like stink 140 mph and i used to chase boxters for fun ;D the reason i got rid of it was the auto box started slipping and the cost of petrol went through the roof, only got around 20 mpg which was not far of my old v8 range rover so she had to go, the insurance was less than my MK2 golf GTI but then i am old and have full no claims, still i loved it and would love another one if i could afford the petrol

I would definitely recommend buying a turbo'd one, the standard 2 litre is very gutless up hills and acceleration. The 5 cylinder engines do sound lovely though..

As for fuel issue Rusty, I had an Impreza Turbo which when driven hard did low teens in mpg but when driven moderately consumption was much better. The missus covers about 10 miles a day on the school run and local trips to the shops etc. We will use it on our fortnightly trip up to London, this is where the e30 let us down. Lovely car to drive but just no room for two car seats and a lanky teenager in the back! Also, @ POPUPTOASTER, I am planning to get myself either a 340 or 360 Volvo as a project/daily drive to work. that strike engine site has started me going now........ Thanks for all responses.

Well, if the T5's over there are like the ones I've worked on here, there are two faults that seem to plague them as they age. Firstly, check to see that the engine is dry of oil where it meets the transmission. I've done several rear mains on these cars, and it's an engine out job which is just generally a pain in the . The fix (according to Volvo, and it seems to be working for friends of mine) is simply keeping a clean PCV system to maintain acceptable levels of crankcase pressure. Naturally, if the engine is producing too much crankcase pressure for reasons unrelated to the PCV, the motor will continue to puke seals at a rate you will find difficult to believe. The second big issue that I've run into is regarding the ABS- the modules seem to like to fail. In many cases I've seen, the cracked internal connections that cause the failure can be re-soldered (if you're brave), but sometimes its easier to get a new one. It is quite an outlay though. Those are just my $0.02, based on my personal experiences. I'd love to have a T5 as a daily hack, and provided they're maintained there's no reason it won't be a great car for you as well!

Huh.....is this the same issue that the saabs had on some of their models circa98-00? I was researching into the Saab 9-5 wagon and the only negative besides having a crappy auto g/box was this similar issue. tried searching for remedies or preventitive maintanance procedures online but found none so scrapped the idea of getting one. Thanks for that bit of knowledge there!

PCV is an easy fix as long as your handy with a spanner. To check if the PVC needs changing, just take out the dipstick while the engine is running, if thers smoke, then it needs looking at. ABS modules can be repaired for £60, theres always someone who will do it on the Volvo forums

you could get a 2.0 turbo 940 estate. they are great. mine started out like that. ended up destroying a lot of expensive chav chariots off the lights right up to healthy speeds once i'd done with it.
850s are ok, the m90 manuals are very good

Sounds like you got a good bargain there, have you picked it up yet? As Claymore suggested, the vpcuk forum is a must, so much info on there. good luck with it and post some pics soon! ;D
