O-Series. Derived from Marina/Ital motor but with OHC. Decent engine, AFAIK. Torque steer may be bad. I used to drive a Montego 1.6 and it was in that! So a 2.0L turbo... Nice cars. I'd have one. ;D I'm

Fast cars indeed! O series can be upgraded and you can get decent power out of them, but a lot of people tend to put the T16 engine out of the Rover 800 turbo, almost a bolt in operation and very potent! Suprisingly reasonably priced still despite getting rare now due to severe rot!
Get one, get one now!!

I had a non-turbo MG Maestro, and that was great fun to drive, and like street says, engine upgrades are relatively simple for big power. Would definitly recommend one. 2K would get you a near minter, but it'll rust faster than you can weld it up.

I love those 'ordinary' EFi MG maestros, they are great, super torquey. Feeblest door locks evAr though, as my mate found out on more than one occasion.
Once his got nicked and the thieves popped the engine, so we replaced it with a Rover 820 16v unit, all bolted straight in, some issue with the engine manangement though meant it always ran a tad rich aferwards..... never did get to the bottom of that.

Fantastic car...this was mine and I miss it with a passion. Stories of massive torque steer are all true but that just adds to the exitement. The shove in the back you get from a proper full fat no nonsense big turbo is the best. I loved the little details like the extra cooling fan to blow cool air on the carb. I also agree about the crappy door locks, some traveller nicked mine and burn't it out

I think I`ve said before but my Dad had one when they were new - wrote it off 10 days later though It was due for its first service the next day ..... Was damn quick though - we had fun Cossie scaring for those few days .. He had an efi MG before that which I had off him after, that was pretty nippy too, as the ticket I got for racing a BMW off the lights while towing a trailer proved

I cannot muster any love for these, despite the facts that they are clearly quite good and seriously under-rated. I just think it would be like owning a giant metal prophylactic... like you're ever gonna pull in a maestro.

Feeble door locks don't mean a thing when you can push all of the windows down from OUTSIDE the car, as you could with mine. How it didnt get nicked i'll never know.

Decent cars and a bit of a performance bargain, though these cars have seriously appreciated over the years, gone are the days are picking up one of these in the bargain motoring section for 300 quid with tax and test!
They are indeed infinitely upgradeable all across the range, the T series motor virtually drops straight in with minimal hassle and gives 200bhp out ofthe box, pretty useful in a car that only weighs around 2100lbs! Of course, if you're Andy Nicholls, then 550bhp without nitrous is the way to go ;-)
Using the torsen box from the Vitesse/Coupe/ti makes it a very much nicer drive as torque steer is dampened to a minimum. I'm not sure about the ratios in the Vitesse/Coupe, but as far as I recall, the ratios for the 620ti are the same as the Maestro Turbo's, the ti engine also has a rather nice alloy sump!
Buy one, ahh go on!

I take it that its just as easy to put a T16 turbo into a normal MG EFI as it is to convert an MG turbo?

Just as easy to convert an EFi as it is a turbo, no more or less work involved, though for my money, I'd like to see a white Maestro city on 14" steelies with a T16 motor, SLEEEEPER! ;D
