I feel a bit cheeky for even asking but I'm in a bit of a pickle so it's worth a try.
I've seen a car I want 250 miles away, the cheapest I could get that to me is about £250. Can't really afford that but if I could borrow a trailer for a day and buy a tow bar I actually stand a chance of being able to afford it! Theoretically I could A-frame it but by the time I've bought that + towbar + fuel it's no cheaper, and there are certain legal issues...
Obviously I would be willing to provide some collateral and be eternally grateful to the Almighty Provider of Said Trailer. Is anyone feeling kind?
I'm in Essex, the car's in Devon.
Yours beggingly, Richard

Drives but no tax or MOT. I know you can drive to a pre-booked MOT but you can't get tax without an MOT as far as I know??

Just a thought... I hired a car transporter from the local van hire firm to pick up my beetle, it cost £97 for 24 hours

Holsworthy. I have looked at hiring a trailer but it means next to no saving over having it transported (as I need to buy a tow bar and fuel). Think I'm too young to actually hire a vehicle too (I'm 19 and most places are limited to 23+ from what I've seen) Think I shall have to give up on this car as a bit of a dream!

if your only 19 you wont have trailer on you licence you have to take an extra test also you need to make sure your tow vehicle has got the required train weight to tow a trailer with a car on it, a mate of mine got pulled towing a trailer with a volvo 340 on it behind a mk2 granada and got a £600 fine and 3 points and that was with the right licence, another mate that had'nt done much towing before go a sway on and lost control wrecked his £2000 cavalier sri130, £800 brian james trailer and the mini he'd just spent £1000 having preped and painted that was on the trailer, so £250 may look expensive but if you look at the bigger picture its not that much

Hmm, perhaps I'm reading the DVLA site wrong but it seems to say that I can tow a trailer as long as its total weight incl. load is not higher than the unladen weight of the tow car (and total weight is under 3.5t - if my licence was pre-97 I would be allowed up to 7.5t)? Which I think my situation would allow but that depends on the exact trailer. Either way, probably irrelevant now

If you can get insurance get the train book it for mot near to home drive it to mot. You do not need tax to drive to mot Just insurance a car that looks fit for the road and break lights are a must.

Well the DVLA site seems to say it's fine Category B vehicles may be coupled with a trailer up to 750kgs MAM (allowing a combined weight up to 4.25 tonnes MAM) or a trailer over 750kgs MAM provided the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle, and the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes MAM. For example: a vehicle with an unladen weight of 1.25 tonnes and a MAM of 2 tonnes coupled with a trailer with a MAM of 1.25 tonnes could be driven by the holder of a category B entitlement. This is because the MAM of the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes and also the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the drawing vehicle I can't understand why they mention the 750kg limit then go straight on to disregard it and say it's legal to tow something heavier under the right conditions. The example they give is pretty much spot on to what I would be doing, I think. Bloody confusing stuff, I feel sorry for anyone who has to tow anything complex with any regularity! I know I can drive without MOT/tax with a pre-booked appointment but it's unlikely I could pick it up and drive all the way back to my nearest test centre in the same day, do you think that'd be a problem?

DUDE we all stand corrected You have just informed probably hundreds of what the dvla don't want you to know. you have read the small print I concure you can drive up to a maximuim weight of 3.500kg. ;D. I only have an a frame though qoute DVLA web site "Example of category B with a trailer weighing over 750 kg: Motor vehicle with an unladen weight of 1,500 kg and a maximum weight of 2,000 kg towing a fully loaded trailer with a weight of 1,500 kg – total weight 3500."

Also - nogger, why exactly did your mate get the fine/points if he had the correct licence? I don't get it (see what you're saying about getting a professional to do it though!)

Does that mean over 3.5T all in? I'd have thought that was quite difficult with the cars you mentioned, £600 seems pretty harsh

Train weight I think is the wieght the vehicle is allowed to tow defined by the manufactor or dvla plate on car or trailer. Its kind of determin by the hand brake to. I was close to limit when I towed a ford galaxy with my seirra by dvla deffintions. my car about 11ookg kerb weight and the galaxy is about 1500kg kerb so 2.6 tones. I was over the manufactors limit. yet I hold a 7.5t +750kg trailer licence
