Hmmm, Ford Escorts and Orions that don't feature the term "RS". Hardly exotic to the masses I suppose but for me personally, from mk1 to mk4, they hold a unhealthy nostalgic pleaure. I wont bore you guys with my previous car history(all Escorts.....) but thought a thread to show/tell someone other than my poor good lady would maybe be a good move. A bit of info on my current slice of Dagenham... At the end of the drive, lurking smugly in the garage is my 1971 Ford Escort 2 door. I bought this with the usual rose tinted glasses about 4 and a half years ago as a bare shell. Last taxed in 1989(so its been off the road more than it was ever on it... ) what started off as a prep and paint has so far ended up with new sills, full floors, strut tops, front panels, wing rails, rear quarter...... Most house holds have the main long term project and this is it for me. Its now painted underneath, inside and in the engine bay, but the long slog of preping for paint means i'll not touch it for months on end! Guarding the garage door is a 1982 Escort Ghia 1300. This also has been off the road for far too long, but fortunately, apart from the usual lower rear arch rust, the shells in great, never been welded shape. I'm currently going through this mechanically due to the period of time its been off the road, but its nearly there and needs to be on the road very soon due to the last car on the drive... The last car on the drive is my 1989 Ford Orion 1600 Ghia(carb). I only purchased this mobile skip a month ago with short tax and test to use as a daily but i've grown stupidly attatched to it for some reason She needs quite a bit of work for the next MOT though which is due at the end of September, so she will be swapped around with the mk3 . I want to get the Orion back to totally original condition, correct wheel trims, dealer plates etc, so that should be an interesting journey seeing as it really is on deaths door.... Should be a fair few updates as I rush to get the mk3 ready for daily duties ;D

Yes, thats the problem you buy something old and tatty expecting it to die on you and it just keeps on going, scrapping it feels wrong in the end, my old xantia did that was very scruffy but just kept going until gearbox let go but it had been making a noice for over 30k miles!

Good on you for keeping these old, totally non-exotic fords on the road. They were the cars which were part of everyone's daily life for years, and one day someone will say 'where have all the Orions gone'. In fact, I think I just did! ;D

I always find it amazing how quickly time flies, sorry for the lackof updates chaps, must try harder! So seeing as it looks like snow outside, best tap up an update on the fleet. First up the rusty Orion.. In a rare mature, sensible moment, I realised I already had enough on as it was with the Mk1 and Mk3. So I sent her packing to the car park in the sky and recieved £20 more back than I bought her for. Result! Have to admit though, I hate scrapping a car..... The MK3 is nearly ready for the road, pretty much just the wheels and tyres to sort now. After reading Mr Bo11ox's thread, removed the tyres myself with some levers borrowed from a work mate. Gotta say, its alot easier than I expected it to be. So popped the wheels in the acid bath at work to remove the many layers of paint then blasted them ready for primer. So that leaves the MK1, which I'm please to announce I have my mojo back for! ;D Had a massive selling spree of all my old tat and tidied up my garage so that work could commence again. After reading TonyBMW's threads, I realised that after nearly 10 years of restoring cars,I really should be pushing for better quality repairs. don't get me wrong, I feel i'm not to shabby in my work, but Tony's work as you all know is a league above any of ours! So first up I thought I would practice the invisible repair on something fairly simple. No curves, just something nice and straight forward. So seeing as the replacement sill I had fitted many moons ago, doesnt contain the pressing for the little sill badge, I started with that. Cut out neatly using a combination of plasma cutting disc on grinder and dremel. Tacked in level and then fully welded in.. Then what seems to be the most important part after getting everything level-grinding back the weld. Following the making panels thread I took the bulk of the weld off using a Grinding disc, followed by very carefully taking the remainder down with a flap disc. A bit of a going over with the DA sander and finally I had pushed my metal working skills to the next level. Bloody happy with that I was, which really has brought on the enthusiasm! So whats left to do with my mk1 before I can prepare for paint? Well I need to change the rear scuttle under the back window, and also replace the back panel. So first off i'm going to sort out the back panel. Both back quarters where they meet the back panel are frilly/rusty and the replacement quarter I have fitted, whoever removed it off the old car cut away the lower part too closely and removed too much along with the mounting lip. So set upon the n/s first and replaced the rotten top section. So after that I looked at the missing bottom section. Fortunatly Tony had just done similar type of repair on the M5.... retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=119596&page=3It seems a very logical way to do it, but before reading that, I wouldn't of had a clue! So set about things... Put the old back panel up against to check the gap and i'm happy with that! Just got to repair the "flange" on the other side next, then I can pop the new rear panel on More soon I promise!

Thanks for the compliments guys Bit more work done today seeing as we couldn't go anywhere due to the snow! Onto the O/s now, a nice festering grot fest like the other side was. Couple of wrinkles as well where it has previously had a knock. Definatly work to be done on this side because the bootlid stands out a mile as well! So to start off, out with the wire wheel grinder attatchment to see where the spot welds were and drilled them out Talking of drilling out spot welds, I finally bit the bullet and bought some Cobalt Drill bits a short while ago. I gulped when I bought them due to the price, but now I've used them, money wll spent in my opinion! Flew through the welds a treat! Anyway, enough about posh drill bits! I made up a template of the correct contour using the n/s quarter and used it to get the o/s back into shape. Flattened the little creases and it fell back into shape nicely. Only trouble was it still didn't line up with the edge of the bootlid! So after a bit of head scratching, I put the template against the mint bootlid. Ahhhhhhhh thats why! So with a block of wood and a hammer, some "persuasion" was carried out. A few blows later, success! I now have a nicely gapped bootlid. ;D So with everything aligned I started to focus my attentions on re-instating some metal. Tidied the lip up using the old copper technique (must buy a little block of pure copper actually for future repairs.) Bashed up a new tank mounting plate. Put the tank in to make sure it went in the right place. So happy with its location, Buzzzzzzzzzed her in... Then ground back the weld and admired. Fortunately thats all that needs repairing on this side as the rest of the lip is sound, just wants cleaning up a little. Think I'll clean all the boot area up next and etch prime it before I stick the new back panel on Have fun! Danny
