Have you checked the tension of the alternator belt as a starting point?

It won't always make a noise when it's slipping. I don't know if it's a V or or ribbed belt on a B3, but the V belt on my mk1 Fiesta is awful for slipping and keeping the correct tension if it's a bit old..

right then
new a;ternatort today £90 fitted it tonight and re tensioned up the belt ect but it all back together and started the car
still had to press the accelerator to turn the battery light off and then on tick over it was still them dimly flickering at me.
when i turn the lights on the light stops flickering
also there is no difference in putting fan and heated windows on
the battery is also fully cvharged according to the battery tester i have
have i wasted £90 on this? where else can i look for this?
cheers
Ben

check the battery voltage with the meter with the engine off, it should be pretty much exactly 12.0v then run the engine and check the battery voltage with it running, it should be 13ish at idle, and 13-14v with some revs.
that'll rule out the alt at least

If i tested a battery and it showed 12V i'd class it as goosed (and so would my tester) personly, a battery should sit at 12.5 to 12.8 idealy when off, i'd say you have a duff alt off the shelf IF the battery shows to be healthy ? have a read here www.alternatorparts.com/understanding_alternators.htm
