yes you should run as far away as possible and hide somewhere fast.
Nah they arent bad little cars, mate had one but don't know what the off road capabilities are like.

Rav is designed primarily for road use with some off road capabilities, they are monocoque so not as tough as a proper offroader, things get bent quite easy.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

no one suggested a ssangyong, korando or musso. my musso has been with me 18months now i think. worst mpg i've got out of it was 28, but you don't want to know how much i was towing. non turbo, so its slow, but it does seem to be going on. i need to do brakes for mot, i paid £500 for it, and will happily spend 300 to give it another year. its 1997 and unlike a disco its not rotten. i've done 29k. checked oil half dozen times, never moves and it still seems too clean to change.

If you can live with the badge and looks of a ssangyong I don't see any issue with them.
A friend of mine did have one and that was a plum but that's just one persons story. I know a guy who's having nothing but problems with the 2.5TD in his Pajero but all the ones he had before (inc a Delica) were very reliable.
I think if there's one thing this threads gone to prove is that really there's little in it with the majority of 4x4's, particularly those built through the 90's.

Maybe I should class my motor as not a 'proper offroader' then Me too simple fact is a monocoque off roader has more chance of bending the shell rather than bending the chassis (obviously) it makes them more difficult and expensive to fix. I'm not saying they are worse off road, but its riskier buying one as an off road toy if your on a budget and need to be able to fix it with a hammer and scaff pole.

I had a Frontera Sport swb and found it used to tramline quite badly.nice enough to drive tho,and the kids loved it in the back with the roof/windows and tailgate glass out!
Pajero 2.8 Exceed wasn't that good on diesel, but it was an auto tbh.you must check all the various diff locks ect work before you buy,and use them occasionally to keep them in good order.
My fav was a '90 discovery 3.5 v8 tho.in black with privacy glass and that rumble it would make the traffic part like the red sea when drivers spotted it bearing down on them! 12 mpg tho........

IF you can find a sound discovery I would go for it. The engines are good although the early 300tdi has a design flaw in the head that causes it to warp, Landrover solved the problem on later engines though.
I would avoid Freelanders unless you want a whole load of trouble. The main workhorse of the farmers around here does tend to be the Diahatsu Fourtrak though.

The 300TDi has a known trouble area with the bottom pulley sometimes comming loose after cam belt change which ruins the crank. If mechanic does cam belt change etc properly (Loctite / torque) then not a problem. Only cure if pulley comes loose it remove crank and weld up damage before remachining. Normally the bodge is simply weld the pulley to the crank so another area to check. Paul H

No one has mentioned the Nissan Terrano/Ford Maverick yet, so I'll stick in my £0.02 worth.
Been running the MK2 for over 12 months now, and whilst not great on fuel (as the all aren't) doing between 2-25mpg, the 2.7 TDi does have a lot of grunt. Basically a forklift engine, so not too refined, but it has a decent chassis under it, and the little bit of off road I've done it does seem pretty capable tbh and mines a LWB version !
You just gotta watch out for sill panels and front wings/arches rusting out !
