hi ya guys, Ive been dying to get my hands on a mk1 golf gti ive finally seen one that wont cost me to much. But it has a few little problems on it: Needs a respray ( few patchs of rust, and only cost me £300 as the RAF paint shop do it cheap) New grille (sort that for nothing) New lock on the boot ( sorted for nothing) And the bolster in the drivers seat. Side trim sort that aswell Ill be changing the wheels for somethink a little driffent, untill i can find some really nice wheels, I'm keeping her the same height and just doing the outside of her, as i have a mk2 polo track car for my spare time , i also like to buy a car that needs some work, so its my own work done on the car, not someone elses. Here are some pics of her. The engine bay looks so messie, i think i could get lost in there Ive already decided i want and told the garage but i cant put a deposit down till monday, and have a test drive then aswell. They are asking for £1195, is that a fair price for the car? I might try and go lower. Jibber

ehh... no?!? for a start - they can got much cheaper and better condition for another - you're spending well over a grand on a doer upper and yet another, the golf/dub things been done - you arent buying a rare car you cant find another example of...
ps if you think I'm talkin crazy, ask my mate that has a mk1 gti cabbie and a mk2 gti 16v in better condition, albeit without mot, for not £200 between them...

I cant make any sense what you are saying, so i dunno what you are on about.
I'm not looking for a car that is driffent, i don't want a car that has the work that has been done already on it. I have a mk2 g40 which is driffent (alot driffent), so things can be made to look driffent.
The car only needs a touch up, so i decided that for £300 i could get a fully respray, i have my ex who has a box full off mk1 golf gti parts, so I'm not spending any money on it, other then any little nick nacks.
As for the seats i know someone in herts who will do it for me cheap, so that wont cost to much, I'm not looking for a jaw dropping car ( my mk2 is that), I'm looking for somethink that is to my taste, be its been done before i mind.
And you tell me were i can find a car that has a hood that is good condition plus one spare, and good seals, not bad body work? for under 1k as ive been looking months and not found any, yeah the gay looking one without the clipper kit on it are cheaper, but i want them with the clipper kit as they look so much more sexier.
Jibber
ps thanks guys for the in put, and also yeah the mk2 golf gti do go cheap ive seem then, but some cabbies do hold there value for some reason.

alright well you asked folk for their input and you got it, no need to bite folks ankles if its not exactly what you want to hear.
I think you should haggle the price down to the max and then buy it cos it looks fairly decent to me. PLus you should defo stitch up your ex for a few spare parts for it, its the least he deserves.

So you told the Garage that you wanted the car and that you were going to give them a deposit on Monday. When you get there on Monday you will then tell them that you still want the car but not at the advertised price....Do you not think that the Garage may be a little curse word about that?

I wasnt biting there ankles off, i was just saying that i didnt understand what the person was saying, if i was biting you would know about it. I am going to haggle them down, as i said before, but i also feel in love with the car when i first saw it, ive also wanted one for a long time. I know that cabbies don't go for much in the winter as there a sort after car in the summer, but I'm looking to keep this long term. When i find a car i love i find it hard to sell hence I'm keeping my mk2 and turning it into a track car. Jibber

I reckon if you can manage to get if for just under a grand, say £900 or so, it will be a good buy The rev has a good point though- If you can hold of for a few months until the suns gone in, the price on this one and others will be lower for sure. But if you cant wait that long I don't think you'll go too far wrong with this one

I said that I'm interested in the car, and if i like it after the test drive that will be putting down a depoist on it. And also the person selling it wasnt there till monday, so i cant tell some ramdon person in the garage I'm not to sure about the price. The car has been for sale for a while, so I'm sure he will bite my hand off at the offer. Jibber

to be honest, I think that's well pricey , I'd not want to pay any more than £500-600 for that, it just looks neglected and a little worn out.

i thought it was the 'mk4' cab that was a mk3 underneath (facelifted front, same ass), the mk3 cab was meant to be a whole new car wasn't it?
anyway.... seen loads of t+t'ed fairly smart mk1 cabs for 5-600 quid. Admittedly the leather in that one is a bonus but won't add loads to the price. Look to pay no more than £750 i'd say given that there's bits of trim missing and stuff, if he really thought it was a decent car he'd at least put them back on and tidy the paint. chances are he's had it say round since winter when he paid £350 for it and he's punted it onto the forecourt on the first warm spell.
Engines are pretty bulletproof, but watch out for smoke on overrun - get it nice and warm, drive at a steady speed in 3rd for a mile or so, then pull up and stop as if at a junction. look for a cloud overtaking you.... this'll be the valve guides, common fault on DX engines. Rest of it is as simple as you like. gearbox is meant to be notchy and 'bent' (2nd ain't straight behind 1st, it's all on a squiff), check the MFA works.
