So we had a debate the other day about 'value' of VW campers. But these are certainly not the only things with spiralling prices. So if you are more concerned with getting cool without parting with too much cash or paying over the odds for an image, what are your options? I'll start the ball rolling: Bay window (£1000-£10000): OR Commer Camper (£0 - £2000): Or how about..... Mk1 Escort... £1000 for an MoT-less 2-door lawn-mower engine affair up to, what, £20k+++ for a twin-cam And the alternative: Vauxhall Viva £1000 for a stunner. Any other suggestions?

wedge is a viable and still (at the moment, in the right circles) cheap alternative to a rusty old bay...

Ahhh, but! A good wedge is what, £4000 now? Still paying a premium for that badge... so... How's about a some J-tin in the shape of a Hiace for less than half that!! Get on them JDM Mods!!

Good call Pog! I love a bit of pedestal-bashing underdog-celebrating discussion.
No time for pic's but what about 5dr Starlet instead of 3dr?
Silvia S12 instead of AE86 Corolla?
Sometimes I may concede that the alternative doesn’t do quite what the original is meant to (which is probably a load of bar-room hokum anyway), but they’re usually far cheaper, way more interesting and suit 95% of what people look for in the expensive icon.

Silvia S12 instead of AE86 Corolla? Excellent suggestion! What would have happened if 'initialD' had used something else....

Originial Mini Coopers are getting to be far more than they ever were new, there are loads of small car alternatives. Mk1 Fezzas, Renner 5s to start with can be bought for far less but be equally as cool.

Pog, a good wedge is £4k with scene tax, I can still get hold of good bays for less than that ... Good wedge, my bro's 2.1 auto twin slider Devon Transporter, with full "kit" bumpers etc. £700

You must have a good wedge source. I've not seen any that haven't been rotten or phooked for sensible money for a long time. How's aboot: Karmann Ghia OR Renault Caravelle. Highly comparable, but the much rarer Caravelle must only be a fraction of the 'cost' of a KG....

Ace thread! ;D Mk1 Escort... £1000 for an MoT-less 2-door lawn-mower engine affair up to, what, £20k+++ for a twin-cam And the alternative: Vauxhall Viva £1000 for a stunner. Yeah, you could buy a good droop snoot for a fraction of the price of a twin cam Escort. And have five gears! HC Vivas are, IMHO, far cooler than mk1 Escorts, except when you need to buy panels.

Definately like to champion the underdog! An example thats been mentioned on here at some time before: MK3 CORTINA- Gained a bit of a cult status and some high profile ads on TV featuring the mk3 sent prices twizzling up a bit: VAUXHALL VENTORA: Same great coke bottle shape but no sugar:

what a bloody good thread..!! i don't know much about the camper thing really but hows about a tranny mk1 camper?? bedford cf early one!?? and viva is a good alternative to the ecort.. escorts are great but the viva had a better suspension set up std and so handled better std... BUT have u tried getting bits for a viva ha hb or hc??? wings are like poor quality wobbly children's play pony @~#%!! yet escort stuff is reall easy to get hold of anywhere...!! it kinda takes away from the initial cost of the car really doesnt it?! yes u can get a vive for 20% the price of an escort but parts (if u can find um!?) makes the package more expensive swings....... roundabouts............. swings................ rounda......b...o....u..t......s.....! sooooooo hows about the chevette still found cheep especially the saloons (and i prefere the 2door sal to the hatch but thats just me lol..) still parts available etc.... great little car.... others.... marina coupe...? talbot sumbeem...? / avenger..? triumph toledo dolly/sprint..... cheep as chips and a roll...! and just to throuw in a wild card............... wait for it.................................. renault 12!! hey.... i know i know they are fwd but imagine a rwd converted one with a i dunno.... volvo/ renault turb 1.7 on a volvo 340 bell housing and the rear mounted gearbox..... just an idea... i have tooo many and have to let one out now and again or i WILL have to build it.... ive got too many projects as it is..... blah.... blah...... si

Dolomite 1850HL/Sprint is an infinitely superior alternative and much cheaper (although the Sprints have just hit the "Military Power" throttle opening on their values) ......guys who used to run the dealerships always speak about comparing the cars and having set lap times, Sprints used to decimate the 'Scorts left right and centre. Shame BL didn't fully develop it's rally competetiveness, although winning the Brit touring car championships numerous times as well as competing strongly in all other forms of competition... Much nicer interiors, too! ;D >edit< Damn, black8driver just beat me to it ;D I must point out these aren't my opinions though, even though I do prefer the Triumphs from the Escort, purely on paper. I'd love to drive a well sorted one and find out though What about Renault 21 Turbos, as an alternative to early Subaru Imprezas? I know they're not all 4WD but they're fast, interesting (in a Legacy "what was that brick that went past") way, too.
