i always bid a random number like £157.34, which won me my polo coupe S for £155, won daft stuff recently like £4.20 for a good set of bug GT wheels, would have had them for 20p if it wasn't for newbies bidding 'em up.

bidding on other items we in the office have worked out the best way to decide on your absolute maximum bid. Say you want something for £400. Imagine bidding £400. You loose and the auction runs out at £410. How do you feel? Wish you'd bid to £415. Then that's your maximum. repeat. Imagine the auction runs out at £450. How do you feel, not bothered then that's over your maximum. Seems to work. Doesn't help you win but doews focus you on what you really want to pay.

I always bid odd numbers too. It's suprising how few people actually do but it can make the difference. I don't normally poke bids in last minute as I subscribe to the "decide what you're willing to pay" method. Only time we did was when we bought Isabels little cart thingy. We were watching it end and someone out bid us with 30 seconds to go but it was by less than the next nominal amount so we knew that was their max offer. A rush last bid over the top of theirs (which was made even more awkward by clicking in the wrong places etc) won it for us wiuth 2 seconds to go!

Well I'm sure the true ebay l33t don't share a lot of their tricks and I don't blame them.
A few months back I sold a whole heap of stuff, something like 15 auctions all ended 15mins after one another. Watching the bidding was more interesting than watching TV. Everything happened in the last 1min with the bid price often doubling.
The sad thing about Ebay is a lot of bidders feel afraid of putting their top bid in early but also don't want to get what they want as cheap as poss. So they wait till the last minute and bid just above the current level but loose out. They then message you to say they were gutted they lost and would have bid more.
In a lot of ways Ebay is a class example of human behaviour shooting itself in the foot.

I'm a sniper, I normally want something bad enough to make sure I get it. I also use the two window method (normally 2 computers) but for example I'm out saturday night and two parts are coming up that I need, sniping allows me to get them. The last auction I won was for a set of wheels, I was driving home at the time and when I turned up I'd won. I've never really got bidding early but it makes some sense after reading this thread.

I am a Last minute bidder with a set maximum, I don't get drawn in anymore If I really want something then I run 3 windows all open at the same time Window 1 has the item and time remaining in it, don't change this only refresh it to check the time Window 2 has the 40 second flush bid in, one click away from completion Window 3 has the 9 sec final maximum bid amount and always an odd number, so never go up in £5 or £10 increments ..... go 2 or 7 instead The "Flush" bid is to flush out (Usually in a panic) the last minute bidders ;D when you know you have the Final bid in at 7-9 seconds just one click away rather than them having to go through all the "Confirm Bid" stages ;D Interesting anbout the early decent bid to out psyche bidders, might try that one Remember as well that you did not win anything..... you just paid more than anyone else was prepared to ;D

Interesting anbout the early decent bid to out psyche bidders, might try that one It also flushes out any shill bidding - ie mates bidding up the item Always suspicious if I early bid and am out bid very shortly after and I'll then do a very thorough check on the Bidder and the sellers feedback history - normally I'll find it's typical shill bidding and then all I do is provide all the facts and links to ebay and "complain that it's blatent breaches of ebay policy that get ebay a bad name" Normally a bid is rather quickly withdrawn!!!

eBay is great fun but you have to remember that if you don't get that car, there will be another one for you. I had the whole family round the computer at the end of an auction for an XR2 lookalike Mk1 Fez, outbid by 22p or something stupid, then the next week I got an actual XR2 for £300. I think sniping is good practice, I enter my highest bid on that with a load of odd numbers on the end, then I watch the auction too and if it's going up and I want to put in a higher bid do it in the last few seconds, that way your snipe bid is just a backup incase everything else dies.
