Ive been offerd a R5 GT Turbo as a swap for my golf, Wonderd if you guys thought it was a good deal?? this is what he has sent me - 11 months mot/5 months tax T28 turbo,tubular manifold,one piece downpipe,gaz coilovers,front mount intercooler,gt tuning alloy lobster,alloy heatshield,alloy rad,alloy oil cooler,2.5 inch gt tuning exhaust with 4 inch tailpipe,uprated hoses,uprated brakes,15 inch alloys sprayed gloss black,fibreglass clio 16v bonnet too be honest my car needs a new n/s driveshaft as makes a noise(£95) is in very good condition for age except the roof has faded and has a dent in o/s rear quarter I have owned it 3 years and spent loads of time and money on it. has got uprated headgasket from gt tuning,runs at normal temp,no overheating issues fan cuts in fine,no blue smoke,oil pressure is normally four on the gauge has had all the right bits changed on it car is running low boost (10 psi) to keep it reliable, with the mods on it can be run at 18/20 psi safely My car - retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=FSW&thread=109754&page=1#1388175The R5 GT Any advice etc?? Straight swop? Go over it with a fine tooth comb, check for rust and filler EVERYWHERE, also start it from cold, check the turbo if anything is going to go bang and be expensive it will be that! Check for oil in the turbo, see if you can get a magnet/screwdriver under the sill trim. Even better take axle stands with you and a jack when you go see it to get a proper look under it. as potential money pits go, a 5gtt is right up there with the best of em. its french- very french. curse word thin bodywork that rusts like curse word and dents if you look at it wrong, fragile trim, a engine that needs looking after but ends up always getting ragged, cos tbh you don't buy one not to. they seem very prone to bodging and horrendous 'modifications' too, but i suppose its cos of the type of car they are. good ones are few and far between these days, cos they all either got parked upaide down in a ditch, or barry-ed up to hell than scrapped a few years later when they fell apart/blew up.
id be very, very careful, but if its even halfway decent, its got to be worth more than a more door mk3 8v gti. just loose them gash wheels in excange for something more fitting, like some ronal turbos or something.

She'll come on boost in 1st, the steering wheel with be dragged violently from left to right, you'll be bouncing of the limiter, to interested in not hitting oncoming traffic to change gear, you'll finally grab 2nd, do it all over again, grab 3rd, torque steer settling down now, wastegate chirping away... Heaven...
Damn, i'd have another in a heartbeat! But yes, it will go pop and it will have a god awful shell, but hey, just keep reading my above statement over and over and enjoy...

got to be worth a look... as said, check for rust, rust and more rust... if its in half as good a condition as it looks, then i would have thought its worth considerably more than yours imho.....

Hehe, sounds about right, i drove one once, quite heavily modified, friend had bought it and thought something was up with it, so i took it for a test drive one night. I had to explain the pricipals of torque steer to him whilst trying to keep the thing on the correct side of the road, 2 weeks later he'd sold it and bought a scooby.

Hell yeah, swap away. Wouldn't rely on it as a daily, mind...
If I remember rightly a couple of things to watch for (apart from it continually trying to self destruct, obviously) are busted speedos and broken seats.
The first one I drove was a D-plate Phase 1 with the rubber kit and yellow fogs. Belonged to the guy who was fixing my tuned 1340 Metro (again...) when I was 19. The performance blew me away at that age even though it had already seen some action.

LOL one reason is the chap said the only issue is the paint on the roof isnt great, after emails going back and forth it turns out there is a dent in the rear quarter, needs a new drive shaft, speedo doesnt work, no real service history and the body needs att, I maybe I'm being a bit picky but its taken 14 emails to find out about just those items and I'm worried there is more, he's about 100 miles away and I don't want to waste my time or his. And the RS Turbo is local and only has a issue with needing a bit of paint on the tailgate

Sounds like the RS is the more sensible option (unfortunately). I'm a bit biased on 5's though as I owned my 1990 phase 2 for 9 years! The speedo thing is an easy fix as it's the PCB that splits where it bends around the casing at the back of the clocks. 20min fix with some 00 wire wool and a soldering iron. The lack of history would be a concern but its got all the right parts you'd want to see if you did want a tuned one. GT Tuning parts weren't cheap back in the day, I can vouch for that lol.

at the end of the day for him to want to swap for a golf means he's had enough and wants a reliable car! go for the RS it wont kill you or bankrupt you and prices for them have turned the corner and beginning to creep up due to so may been scraped/stolen

Go for the gt turbo, better all round car compared to an rs turbo! Just check for rust everywhere. Can be very reliable even at big power levels if your handy with the tools
