No idea if this is the right place but thought it would be better than a discussion topic that would turn into a rant.
Due to the diversity of this forum, theres a whole lot of random stuff in the for sale section which seems to make finding what you want impossible.
What I'm proposing is a function which allows you to sort the section, in a similar way to ebay, like distance nearest first, within a certain distance, etc etc.
And most importantly, being able to seperate the age of the car out. Perhaps oldest first or even subcategories for era (60s, 70s etc)
I'm only suggesting this because I'm trying to find a retro car, 60s or 70s etc within a certain distance and its almost impossible with the current section. When you do look in there is swamped with a load of 90s non retro rubbish and when you do find something along the lines of what you're after its always too far away or has gone already because its been pushed off the front page by 90s stuff.
Another thing that might be good is a certain post count needed to sell in the for sale section, similar to another forum I'm on, stops people joining and overcharging just because they think we'll pay more.
Only a suggestion, i know nothing will probably happen about it but i think some sorting of the section is needed because its just a higgledy piggledy mess at the moment.
Jono.

If you think something is too modern/ordinary for the 'for sale' section, just click the report button and comment on it's age/type and suitability to be moved to the budget section. If a mod feels you're right (and they do always check their reports) then it'll be moved. The thing is, Retro Rides isn't just about 60's and 70's cars, so just because you're looking in that category, doesn't mean others all are too. Same with post count. Some of the most interesting cars I've seen for sale on here have been from new/newish members. It's badly written adverts that don't follow the rules, or plain, ordinary standard £300 moderns in the main for sale section that ruins it for me. I am currently looking at a 1990's car in the cars for sale section and I reckon it has as much right to be there as anything else for sale. It doesn't suit the budget section because of the type of car it is and it's very Retro Rides even if it's not retro in your eyes I don't think it's possible to make forums searchable by distance etc...so maybe you'll just have to work as hard as the rest of us to find your new ride. It's putting in the hard work that makes it so worth it. If it's a car on your doorstep in your preferred year that you want then you'll never really appreaciate it as much as a car you've had to hunt, scour and really work to find and buy. In the meantime, hit that report button for all those ordinary unmodified moderns - if you don't then how do you expect the main for sale section to be free of them. It's not going to happen if you just sit there moaning at the computer screen wishing it to. ;D

I think thats the best thing about the for sale section!
I would never have swapped my Porsche for a Mk1 Golf without stumbling upon it in amongst all the other random stuff.
If everything was in alphabetical order or age order it would become a bit stale in my opinion!

Down&Out, I have to agree with MM.. My tastes, though not currently represented by the cars on my drive, much like yours, are nearer to 'classic' than what most on this site perceive as 'retro'(but let's not get into that debate, eh? ;D), but there's nothing better than expanding my Want List by finding something I never knew existed because it's of a marque and era I'm not very familiar with.
The other thing to note is that I can get a train from Taunton, Somerset into central London as quickly as I can get from one end of the county to the other. I've driven with Bruce from South Somerset to Wigan to swap some body panels with a banger racer, driven to London to buy a pair of bumpers, got a couple trains to Tonbridge in Kent to buy a Citroen Dyane, driven after a normal working day from Yeovil to Guildford to buy some wheels that were worth nothing... Most sellers are more than happy to pick you up from a local station if it's pre arranged. It's all part of the fun of it.

i'm gonna keep the mods busy then ;D Thanks Al. We try to keep the 'cars for sale' section for 'interesting', sadly people's idea of 'interesting' varies (especially when they want to sell their car). We work hard to keep it this way and created the 'budget' section to filter out the majority of the non-RR stuff. Short of charging for ads, paying moderators for 24hr service, re-hosting the entire forum and writing masses of code I'm afraid the for sale section is about as good as it's going to get.

ok, how about this for an idea then.
have the main cars for sale page as the normal car section. and have a sub section for proper retro rides cars?
then anyone posting a normal car will stick it straight in the normal car section and would have to make an effort to put an add in the RR section?

Al, sadly we can't have a section for everybody's particular idea of what a retro car is. Of the nineteen cars you've reported since last night very few weren't cars that aren't considered retro by the majority of RR users (or at least the moderators). I suppose there could be a consideration to seperate the sections into age groups? Pre-70s 70-85 85-95 95-00 In the meantime, could you restrict your reporting to cars which break the rules rather than cars you personally wouldn't like to own?

;D sorry. i did look thou the for sale section rules. guess thats the issue, we all have different views on what makes a RR car. personally i'd stick the MM mx5 in the budget section as well as everything else i reported. maybe you should change the forum from "retro rides" to "slammed and rimmed rides" ;D i'll stop now.

Maybe I should have saved myself over 200hrs work and just left it "slammed and rimmed" which took one day at the very beginning of the build.

I was just thinking that agre related could work.. how about pre-72 (covers tax exempt motors) 73-82 - covers suffix type plates (up to Y reg) 83-92 everything with a prefix plate ( A reg on - till the 20yr cut off for most insurance classic) 92-00 for K reg on Migth be an idea also, if everyone continues to put location/postcode and a price in the topic - what more can be asked of?? however i like it as it is, its good to see what people have for sale - i keep forgetting about the budget section tho.. if its a name of a car int he title that I'm not interested in, then I don't open it.. Like others have said, its searching that helps us find things we might have necessarily bought...

maybe you should change the forum from "retro rides" to "slammed and rimmed rides" ;D It's not quite that simple, but I'm not as embarrassed by the title as you'd like me to be I suspect. RR is not Practical Classics...there will be no apologies from me for being unblinkered. Thank you. You owe me about two hours, but it made your point! ;D ps. The day Mystery Machine's MX5 doesn't represent RR is the day I leave. That goes for your builds too though Al, I'm genuinely surprised you can't see the merits of so many cars that are, in my opinion, representative of this place.

i'm gonna bump this up rather then reporting all the non retro's in the for sale section. I can see possibly 3 or 4 cars on the For Sale front page that 'don't belong' there, mainly because they are new adverts and the Mods haven't moved them yet. If the site isn't to your definition of what you believe Retro means, maybe you should be looking at yourself as the issue, not the site? If I visit a restaurant and the food isn't to my taste, I don't ask them to change the menu, I find a new restaurant.
