Well... Bug Jam wasn't without incident... suffice to say, a gearbox swap in the pits, interspersed with the Pod's best effort to drown us all and send all our kit into orbit kept things.... um... interesting! BUT.... Friday's RWYB saw an 18.7 from the van without third gear being present..... Sunday's VWDRC qualifying saw the times go from 18.6, 18.4, 18.2 and then FINALLY on the last qualifying run.... 17.7 That's quicker than Abi's old 16v Corrado ran at Avon Park last year Sadly in eliminations, a plug lead popped off, and the van hit the heady heights of a 20 on a 17.5 dial in! b*gg*r! Just to round off the proceedings, we managed to blag a last run before the finals (eliminated racers are sometimes allowed to run inbetween rounds) and Abi weighed in with a 17.5 HOW CHUFFED! OK, so it wasn't cheap.... but we've managed to bring the Vans 1/4 mile times down by nearly 4 seconds Got a few pics which I'll post when I've sorted them!

What exactly powers the van and, what kind of weight is it? Shaving 4 seconds off is mighty impressive, congrats on that!

That extra 400ccs and a bit of work goes a long way!
Makes me wonder about just throwing in the L28 I have sitting in the garage, just for curse word and giggles. 2.4L -> 2.8L ... hmmmmmmm.. wonder if I'd get 4 seconds! ;D Probably not... 4 seconds would get me into the 12's and that's not likely!!

Excellent stuff! - I witnesed the 17.7 from the banking & it looked mighty indeed I know its one thing to get a car quick down the quarter and somehow its seem so much cooler to have a bus that does quick times.... but I can't help wondering what that engine would do in a Bug P.S; whats the spec on the gearbox apart from the Kennedy clutch? Surely its not a stock box?

Wonderful!! Give your lady a big old hug from me!!! Next stop the tens, eh? ;-) ;D Will do.... ha ha! I think she's well and truly been 'bitten'.... up to last weekend it's been about championships and points.... but last weekend was officially a 'numbers' weekend... and she's talking about tenths of second drops in ET now... haha!

Surely its not a stock box? The gearbox is (now) an early(ish) type 3 IRS box with a superdiff and a heavy duty sideplate... (the broken one was a stock '03 box with superdiff and sideplate - but it had done a season in Rob's hillclimb car) and the thought of putting the engine in a bug had crossed my mind... but that's too obvious!! Polo squareback FTW! hahaha!

Polo squareback FTW! hahaha! Oh its got to be done - Roof chopped, dark satin blue with chequered roof, deep dish weller steels....... & a foooking great stinger sticking out the back ;D Retro-Rides group project anyone? Gearbox spec seems pretty 'de-rigur' for hi-power aircoolers, it would be interesting to know how much power you are running since my mate is hoping that his similarly equiped gearbox will cope with Audi TT power in his bay - I fear it won't Yes - well done to Abi, I was thinking whilst watching the racing that you've got to be pretty 'deft' with your gear changes in a bus - which are vague and long at the best of times. Getting a quick change must be pretty vital in getting a good time, especially with the increased drag of the BUS shape. BTW; it seemed that some of the big VWDRC names were missing over the weekend, the likes of Russ Fellows, Mark Prosser etc - have they moved on to other things? Certainly from a spectators point of view the racing lacked the thrill of last year - perhaps i'm just getting used to seeing quick aircooled VWs?

don't think Mark Prosser was ever VWDRC?
I think Russ Fellows was selling his engine a while ago?!? Paul Hamilton wasn't in VWDRC competition, he did bring his (VW Powered) 13 Second Bay Window panel down but the rain stopped play in RWYB.
Ken Blomer and Paul Jackson ran a side-by-side 9 in qualifying... there were a few big hitters about....
Beetle/Type3 IRS boxes are pretty strong bits of kit usually.... but by all accounts a stock bay gearbox is pretty much indestructible...
