"This is a standard Marina Coupe which has Been modified to become a hatchback, by the addition of a tailgate from a Mark 3 Capri. I forgot to read the leaflet on the car explaining about the modification, but I think it was a professional job, available to order. Both the car and the tailgate appear not to have been hacked about too much in order to fit. An interesting alteration to one of the few nice cars (the other being the TR7) made by British Leyland in the 1970s. " How bizarre is that! www.flickr.com/photos/nakedcharlton/131531236/

God I am glad to see that still exists! It was a private modification and uses a Metro slam panel and light panels with a modified Capri hatch and upper hinge system and was done during the late 80's early 90's. As an aside, have a look at the Mk1/2 Hyundai Pony 3-door for where the idea came from (seeing as the Marina was the model from which the Pony was developed!) It first appeared when I was editing the Marina Owners Club magazine for the first time round ('89 - 93)

!) It first appeared when I was editing the Marina Owners Club magazine for the first time round ('89 - 93) I was in the Marina club then, with my collection of shonky old Itals! In fact I even wrote a story about them that went in the 'Marina Matters' newsletter, i'd love to find that again.

I wish the pic were from a better angle... Didn't Capris have more of a kink in the shape of the rear end - under the back screen? I'm wondering if the tailgate has been straightened or if the wings have been reshaped...

There were a few professional conversions about turning things like the Princess and the Austin 1800 into hatchbacks. Crayfords did one on the 1800. Amazingly I saw one at the car autions in Leicester c. 1988, thought "thats a nice car why has some fool tried to turn it into a Maxi?" so I never bid on it (IIRC it went for about £300 IIRC which was a lot for a 1800 in '88). Anyway litterally 2 weeks later one of the classic mags does a thing on Crayford and says "they converted about 8 Austin 1800s into hatchbacks from new shortly before the Maxi was launched". DOH!

You learn something new every day!
A friend of mine had an early UK-import Pony for a very long time until it fell apart so I had a lot of opportunity to help him fettle it. It was a very simple straightforward and well-built car and though I never connected it with the 1.3 litre Marina my parents had at the time I can see it's a tantalising glimpse of what the Marina could have been. I'm always one to stand up for Cowley tin but I have to say the Hyundai had much better build quality.
I saw two 1980s Pony pickups looking smart in use a week or two ago, in Whitby, North Yorkshire. Didnt have the camera though.

Compare the Hyundai pick-up with the Marina/Ital pickup...the similarities are there to see. My mate bought a Hyundai for £185 three years ago and all he has done is put fuel in it and two tyres for the MOT's - the bloody thing is bombproof!

Of course it is once you know, I'm amazed I didnt notice at the time Of course, the difference in the pickups is the Hyundai doesnt fold in the middle if you try to carry anything in it ;D
